The Motor Trade God is smiling on us !

As per my predictions we are up again this month on the used prices published in Glass Pricing guides. Mr. Green

Diesel / Petrol are both up on average £650 this month, with some models seeing as much as +£750, sadly the MY10 cars are still dropping heavily. Thumbs Up

Really bad news for people like me though not trading anything in and prices going up every month so a car I could afford in December now £2K more.
I've extended my contract hire now and will start looking again in April when hopefully 2nd hand prices will have softened again when the sun comes out and thoughts turn to sports cars again !
What I would like to try and understand is how the motor trade gets away with effectively running a price cartel whereby every month they en-masse agree prices which they all stick by,if in my trade or any other circulated our customer prices to all our competitors in a little handbook which we all subscribe to it would be in clear breach of the law and deemed anti-competitive so why is the motor trade any different?
We have a medical trade association with about 10 members and any meetings are run under strict DTI rules whereby we are not under any circumstances allowed to discuss tenders or pricing strategies with the meetings minuted. If we were to agree pricing between us it would be deemed to be collusive and therefore highly illegal.
Clearly by drastically restricting the flow of new cars and resulting 3-6 month waiting lists for many cars now of course it will have an impact on residuals as there are so few secondhand cars with far more customers chasing them and therefore now seemingly no discounts available as some people are prepared to pay a premium to secure a deal when they do find one . MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

FFRR has dropped, so if you're looking in that direction then it's not such bad news! Wink

As I understand it, there’s no restriction in supply of new RRS, irrespective of that it’s a simple equation of supply and demand. If LR cant make them fast enough to meet demand, that will result in shortfall, and in turn improved values, MY10 are available all you have to do I search LR online and you’ll find plenty. The facelifted Newer RRS (MY10/11) are falling by approx £1000 per month (-£950 in Feb Guide) at the moment, despite the used prices increasing which again supports the availability of newer cars.

There is no fixing of prices, glass (and others) produce a pricing guide which is a monthly price “GUIDE” reflective of the current market position not a governed or enforced pricing structure.

RRS have always been an anomaly in the motor trade, during their introduction very high premiums were paid on top of retail (again demand out stripping supply), trade prices remained buoyant for the first few years which was good news for early adopters.

You could view the increased trade prices as an opportunity to get a bargain of course, as not everyone will take the recent monthly price hikes into account in their asking price.

Its also worth bearing in mind the recent VAT increase will have had an affect on used prices to a certain extent. Thumbs Up

James,
My contract extension is ad hoc so if you do get one within my budget I'd love to do a deal with you,did you get my recent e-mail just annoyed with myself that I just missed out on the last one you offered me?

x5pea,
I know Glass's is just advisory but it is seen as a bible and most dealers and even some private sellers abide by the prices and on recent cars I've been to look at they are holding up for full price rather than the 5% discounts that were being offered before Christmas.
I went to look at one at Derby on Tuesday and offered what I thought was a reasonable price but they wouldn't shift 1 penny from advertised price based on the new publication and given that somebody will probably buy it before the weekends out at advertised price given there are only 3 with the same spec in the LR AD system why would they?
My understanding on supply/demand of LR cars is that the majority are going to China and India so UK supply is being hit hard hence the longer lead times and therefore less discounting compared with offers I had on my current car of 5%.
Regarding the VAT increase I'm sure a lot are trying to fob customers off with that one but in real terms on a 2nd hand £40K car the difference is about £125 I think? MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

One of the LR dealers I have been talking to told me that a huge proportion of the production is now going to China and India because the prices are higher.
Still think there is some element of manipulation though in order to keep UK prices high with people competing to buy the few that are available due to the weather. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
