England 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey
First Post, Hello everyone

Greetings everyone, i'v been doing a little fourm stalking and like the looks of your setup here, so i have signed up and your now stuck with me!! LOL

I dont currently own a RRS however i will be purchassing my first in the next 6 month's, for lots of reasons.
My daily drive at the moment is a Audi A4 Avant (08, with the Dayrunning LED lights) the car looks mega, and the build quality is superb, but its heavy, under powerd, and eats tryes on the front. Also i'm now in the "Daddy gang" as from August last year and even my Audi being the Avant, once i have baby, pushchair, travel cot, high chair, bags, dog, and the missus in the car...its basicly not big enough, and even less responsive and slower. LOL

So i'm looking for a change. I live in a very rural area between Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham, and when it snows here... it snows properly. Not this nancy pancy 3-4 ft like you soppy southeners get Thumbs Up Now my Audi wont move sometimes even if it rains a little, so a bit of snow, and i keep its fat german arse on the drive and i keep mobile in a 51 plate Mondeo in a frock (Jaguar X-type) and in all hounesty its the best car i'v driven in snow for many many years. 2.5 V6 permenant AWD and its cracking, good fun also and cheep what with it being a Ford. So i'm looking to change soon and its defenatly going to be a RRS i would like some hounest opinions from owners, and some potential pitfalls i could hit??

I will more than likley be purchasing from a dealer, and will have to be a used vehical, as i cant afford new yet. i'm only going to consider a 3.6 TDV8 as i will be pulling my track car down to Silverstone so i want the extra power and torque. What sort of MPG can i expect from the 3.6 on a daily use??? also might be a stupid question is ISOFIX standerd on all the models?? i will be looking for an HSE and would love to find a full spec sheet for the diffrent years, i'm probs looking towards a 58-09 plate at this point so any info would add to my knowlage of the cars already and help me make a final decision.

many thanks
apoligies for the massive first post. LOL 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Lol. Not near me thank god.

I'm about 1100ft above sea level and very exposed, as I live on the edge of a golf course, so lots of lovely wind to make the temperature drop and the snow drift!! 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Hi there.
I came from the same background as you mate, we out grew our A4 Avant (2 kids,1 dog and 4 bikes).
The RRS superb as a family wagon, loads of space and looks great. We opted for a 2.7HSE as the V8 would have been overkill for out needs.
So, buy an RRS and you wont be disapointed Very Happy

Hi and welcome to our family of 4x4's,
I know exactly where you are coming from with your audi A4 avant, i got rid of mine in november and replaced it with a 2.7 sport hse, i had the 2.0 tdi 170 bhp plenty of power but in the wet or snow useless i used to go through a set of front tyres in 11000 miles excellent quality car though 45+mpg never had any faults in 31000 miles, if i went down the a4 route again i would go for the quattro but still the 170bhp power unit. Back to the car in question, sorry can't comment on the V8 but there are plenty of members on here who will be along to point you in the right direction and advise you of everything you need to know Thumbs Up
Ady

Cheers go the replys guys, maby Some of you v6 owners could help? Have you ever used your RRS for long distance towing fully loaded with kids, dog luggage etc??? I would have just assumed that the entry level engine would struggle slightly?? I just don't want to make the same mistake I made with my Audi and get the wrong engine and be stuck with it for 3 years.

Also how does the RRS handle/perform in the snow?? As most models I have looked at have the 20" rims with little tryes? 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Welcome to the Forum Tommy-boy Thumbs Up
I also moved from a history of VW then Audi (Last one being an A4 Avant). There is just no comparison
with the RRS, It is so practical for us Daddy types & with the rear seats down it can swallow a garage load of junk for trips to the dump.... Which seem to be much more regular since becoming a dad Confused The other major factor for me is the safety in which my 22 month old son is being transported in & the RRS is certainly one of the best in my opinion. I have had 2 RRS's now, both bought new. The 1st was a 2.7 V6 HSE and although I loved it at the time I can see how some would find it a bit underpowered (an engine remap did help though). My current RRS is a 2010 3.0l V6 HSE & the difference is amazing, The 3 litre unit has loads of power & is very quick off the mark as well as having loads of torque. Obviously not as much as the bigger engines but it's all a matter of degrees and for me the 3 Litre is perfect. I wouldn't right it off without driving one first! You haven't said how old an RRS you're considering, but, if it's fairly new then I would also look at the finance deals on a brand new car before ignoring that route..... Having the 3 year LR warranty with 3 years LR Assist cover is not to be sniffed at.
Good luck with the hunt & I look forward to seeing you on the forum Thumbs Up 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Funny how many Audi A4 owners have moved in to RRS's! Thumbs Up

I did something similar about 4 months ago. I had an Audi A4 Avant with extra's like Sat Nav and heated seats. Then I moved in to a TDV8. I have child and dog to fill the car, but in all honesty the Audi could have coped.

My choices were brand new Audi or a not new RRS. The Audi was well built, it let me down once, but that might of been my fault! Embarassed & was a pleasure to drive, I just fancied a change. I found a stonking deal (at the time) on a TDV8, I bought it with my eyes wide open and knew it wasn't perfect (due a service and new discs/pads all round)

Things I miss about the Audi:

    Fuel economy - 45 - 50mpg!
Sat Nav - Oh how i miss the Audi Sat Nav. The Sat Nav in the RRS gives perfect instruction, but the route planning can be bonkers! Rolling Eyes
Being able to have a drink and let SWMBO drive. Am very nervous of trusting her with my RRS! Whistle
Bluetooth was faultless - The RRS doesn't always connect to my iPhone automatically.

I managed to burn the clutch out in the Audi about 18,000 miles in to it's life when we had so semi-bad snow. The RRS has been perfect in the snow we've just had. If anything driving the RRS in snow is a bit of an anti climax, as it just handles it and drives! Mine's got 20" wheels which worked fine. I had to put it in to sand mode to make it play up! Whistle

When I first got my TDV8 in August, I drove home and got about 29Mpg, which was great; as a mate took me on the 300 mile long trip to pick up the RRS and his TDV6 Disco3 only managed 27Mpg! Rolling with laughter We were in convoy all of the way back so it's not as if we were driving dramtically different.

I do mainly short trips to and from work with longer trips at weekends etc. and achieve 25mpg(ish) in the nice weather. However... in the winter and because I do a lot of short trips (10 miles) I have been getting just shy of 20Mpg Shocked That's mainly (I think) because of the Fuel Burning Heater, Lights always on, heated front/rear screens on, heated seat on max & have been driving in snow mode. I read somewhere on here that when the car is cold the auto gear changes happen higher up the rev range to warm up the gearbox oil quicker, this seems to be true.

My RRS has some niggles, but if I had to make the choice again, I'd chomp the arm off the person offering the keys to the RRS everytime. Thumbs Up It feels great to drive and is soooooo quick for such a big lump of metal!

My two penneth is, go for it! Do you research as you would with any car. For me it was worth it.

Cheers,

Mark

Cheers Mark, good info in that post. My Audi is the 163tfsi and I'm lucky if I hit 35mpg so not a massive difference from what you have just said... Also isn't it funny how I have also had to have a clutch done with under 20k on the clock. From what I have read up on there are issues with the flywheel. (bitterly disappointed with my first new car about that)

I'll be hitting mid 60's on miles per day, and 300+ at weekends and as mentioned towing my track car most weekends through the summer, so I don't think I'm to unrealistic with the my engine choice.

Cheers for all replys so far, very helpfull and friendly site 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Tommy, welcome to the forum. If you can stretch to it I would suggest you look for a 59 plate 2010MY car - that is one of the early facelifted models with the 3.0ltr TDv6 (more torque and more power, less emissions) and look for one with the trailer assist option (LR's built in anti snaking system for cars towing large trailers and shacks on wheels) - you will probably find them mainly at LR dealers rather than you friendly local indy 4x4 dealer. By buying a 2009/10MY you will still have 1.5 years of factory warranty too. You can search the Approved Used section of the LR website for the exact spec you want and the price range. LR Approved used covers cars up to 6 years old and 100,000miles.
There is another option to the RRS as well - there are a lot of used Full Fat RR's (RRS's big brother) with the 3.6 TDv8 coming on the market as people are chopping them in for the new 4.4Ltr TDv8 - the first TDv8 FFRR's came out in Sept/Oct 2006 so there is also a bigger selection and the FFRR version doesn't have the sometimes problematic Dynamic Response system that the TDv8 RRS has, it does have a much softer and "floaty" ride though. Our sponsor Lookers Park Royal usually have a good stock of both RRS Tdv8 and FFRR's and are a highly recommended dealer by many members of this forum - even though they are at the other end of the country from many of us, the deals we have achieved have been very good from James and his sales team. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW
