Had exactly the same problem on my MY10 - the head unit had to be replaced (under warranty). And I'm afraid you are right in your concerns - the dash squeaked afterwards around the metal inlay for the system controls.

I've had a few problems like this, always resolved by switching the car off for an hour and locking it up. A simple restart never cures it. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

There were a number of similar problems with mine, all of which have been resolved with the upgrade done at LR. LR were very vague with what the upgrade covered but the radio phone and sat have worked faultless ever since and no annoying dashboard warning lights going on then turning off.
