Recovery of an RRS with 2 wheels on ground

Posted this on the D3 site but not had any answer.

Saw a RRS being recovered today, but the recovery truck just lifted the front wheels and towed it with the rear two still on the road. The manual states that under no circumstances should it be towed like this, what damage could this cause?

After a transfer box failure on a Stonefield, I had to remove the rear halfshafts for a suspended tow of the the vehicle from the M25 back up to Newcastle.
I have also removed the propshaft on the rear diff for suspended tows on older 4x4 vehicles and not sure if that would cause any damage on the RRS if done so I point you at Bobby's message above Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

Thanks for the replies everyone, I know that the manual states 'under no circumstances should the car be towed with 2 wheels on the ground' - just wondered what the potential damage could be.

i would'nt have thought any damage would be done if the propshaft was removed.

I would have thought a tow with two wheels only lifted would cause significant damage to the centre differential - especially as it supposed to be limited slip. With the front wheels anchored and the rears on the road it will spin very fast! Not knowing a great deal about RRS differentials I would have thought there is ample opportunity for it to lock up in such circumstances and be essentially destroyed - but the rear wheels would probably also lock up as a result. I certainly wouldn't try it to see what happened!

andy.

Saw the recovery and the prop shaft was not removed, the car was reversed off the drive, driven on to the front wheel lift of the recovery vehicle where the front wheels were secured. Recovery vehicle then reversed up a side road and drove off.

The centre diff isn't designed to take up the difference between the a stationary front prop and the rear prop rotating at "normal" speed. Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

As you saw where the car came from maybe a nice gesture would be to knock on the guys door and tell him what you saw and what damage may have been caused to his car by the ignorant tow truck driver! At least he can have it checked out and repaired at their cost rather than his own. already done so Endjin Thumbs Up and gave him a photocopy of the part of the manual that states that an RRS should never be recovered this way. Just needed to know what the potential damage could be so I could let him know this too.
