2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
**Need Important Advice***

Hi All,

I have reached a slight problem, i have just traded in my RRS which i had done a HPI check 4 months ago all clear .

i went to a private dealer last sunday to see my new purchase. they did their checks and where happy with my RRS and we agreed a price for a part exchange.

i went to pics my new car up today did the deal every one happy signed all the papers. Two hours later i get a call from the dealer asking whether it is possible for the for me to come back as we need to talk. Went back and they are under the suspicion that the car is stolen or a clone. The dealer had done their own HPI which came back clear. should the dealer not take this up with HPI themselves and not me?

Whos responsibility is the car? has anyone been in this situation?

Any genuine feedback would be great.

Thanks

What makes them believe it's a clone/stolen?

they are saying the VIN number on the windscreen is not legit and also about some panel in the engine bay is missing.

No where on the forum does it say there is a VIN number stamp there.

The car has been to LR for servicing and warranty and they did not say anything!!

If you have not part exchanged it yet then it is not their responsibility.

If you have already part exchanged it then it is primarily your responsibility but theirs too and also whoever you purchased it from.

You need to establish if what they say is correct. It sounds like you HPI'd the reg number? What you need to do is HPI tge reg and HPI the VIN plate in the screen and ensure that both tally correctly with the V5 (log book). This will only prove it's correct if the VIN or V5 have not been tampered with.

I'm sure an AA or Police check would be conclusive, but if it is stolen then you will need to persue whoever you bought it from, and it may need to be returned to the rightful owner.

I don't think it sounds like an HPI error as the trader is suggesting a physical issue with the identity.

Hope you sort it out.

The locations of all the places stamped with the VIN are also shown in the owners manual so you can compare the screen slot with the chassis 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Who did you buy it from originally, dealer or a bloke in the pub? I really hope this is just a mistake! Good luck.

Vik

A few post ago you were asking about spare keys, did you have any problem getting one programmed as I presume a LR dealer would do this to the VIN and if the VIN in the car didn't match the cars ECU I presume the keys would not work

Looks like he wanted on de-programmed so as to exclude
It from working.

I guess the car only came with one key and he would like the one that is floating around not to work with the car.

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Fuji White

sounds a bit "fishy" to me. Only having the car for 4 months only getting 1 key and then wanting the old keys deleted??

LR would not check the VIN for authenticity on a service they just do the service.

Sure you knew what you were buying at the time??

Would seek legal advice soonest Exclamation

From my experience, the car if cloned/stolen will be impounded, then it will depend how long ago it went missing and whetther the original owner has been paid out by the insurance company. If this has happened then usually a court hearing is set to determine the ownership.

In my case many years back before HPI, the police wnated the receipt of sale and luckily I had paid a reasonable price for the car. If I had bought it below the normal asking price then I would of been done for receiving stolen goods, as I should of known it was to good to be true.

After 4 months I had the car returned to me as the original owner had been paid by the insurance, otherwise I would of had to of taken a civil action out against the person Ibought it off.

Hope you paid a good price for it Exclamation

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Galway Green

Judging by the posts on pistonheads and e90post this all had a happy ending with the dealer happy the car is legitimate. This all seemed to come down to the VIN sticker in the front screen which looked home made as it was just a white bit of paper with black print on it. Would be interested to see a pic of what it looked like. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award
