What would you think?

(Not my car, a friends)

2006 2.7 HSE

260k (yes that is correct)

Running a dream, never missed a beat.

Cam belt change at dealers.

14 days later engine ceases due (according to AA) cam belt pulley housing collapsing (I'm no mechanic but something like that) and he's now looking at a written off motor.

I'm not naming names, it's still being "discussed" with dealer in question.

Would you all agree be suspicious of bad workmanship? RRS gone

Seems fairly straight forward to me if the failed part is the part fixed by the dealer.

This could be a tricky one.

I am almost certain that any repairs should come with some form of warranty, however, you say the exact diagnosis was cambelt pulley housing collapse, the dealership may argue that they only changed the cambelt and not the pulley. Was there any adivsory on the status of the pulley?

If the pulley was expected to fail at the same mileage then it should be part of the replacement work. As it wasnt part of the work we can assume it is meant to last longer and maybe LR may make a contribution?

Dont think enough RRSs are at that mileage to create a case though Sad Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

I think thats what failed on tims car and destroyed his engine, LR replaced the complete engine at their cost. His mileage was in the 90's though.

As an ex-dealer principal (not JLR) I'd be highly suspicious that they may have damaged it in the process of changing the belt. A pulley housing is nota "wear and tear" item, it requires not maintenance and should last the ,fe of the car unless damaged in the process of dismantlng and re-assemble !!

Get hold of the bits and if necessary get an independent engineers report; such a AA. I'd also contact JLR, not because of trying to get a warranty but as an aid to diagnostics.

The cost is going to make them squeal and squirm but tis their fault, I'd bet.

Not quite the part Ady, but first question is what is the service detail on the pulley or when is it programmed to be changed in the service schedule or has it got a part number, I ask due to the fact the chain that links the cam shafts went on mine and has no part number therefore programmed to last the life of the engine.
Also when it had no part number or service indicator classed as premature failure.

I'd definately be suspicious, when i took mine to the dealers they actually billed me for checking cam shaft and timing although the chain had gone and wasn't turning between the pulleys therefore how can you check it. He needs to stand his ground and if necessary take it to a separate dealer for second opinion worked for me
