Extended Warranty???

My RRS is 3 years old September and I was thinking about the extended warranty option, It's around £880 for 12 months though!!

My RRS has only done 28K miles and has had the suspension bushes replaced twice already (in next week to get them seen again before the waranty expires just in case). I've found it very reliable, but appreciate if things were to go wrong it could get very pricey! Apprentley the warranty includes a £750 MOT gurantee as well??

The questions are:

Has anyone bought this? Would you recommend it? Anyone needed to use it? Any major issues to expect post 3 years?

Advice appreciated.

R

R, I bought it when my manufacturers three year warranty expired recently, only after first buying another companies warranty, which I then went on to find was pretty useless, if you use a main dealer it would only cover up to sixty pounds per hour for labour, and wouldn't cover any time spent on diagnostics equipment, which meant a bill every time it was in the garage.
I ended up cancelling it and bought the lr one instead, it gives me total peace of mind knowing I've got no bills should the car need to go in, obviously the cars ran perfect since I bought the warranty, typical!.

I have exactly the same thoughts - Mine is up at the end of August. I am wondering whether to get an extended warranty. If it's only £880 then it sounds like it will be worth while. You don't get much for £1k where main dealers are concerned!!

See here.

£60ph is ok for most specialists/independants. No good for main dealers if you want bill-less visits as stated.

Read the rest of the T&C's, Platinum cover for vehicles less then 60k will cover all electrical/mechanical components which will keep your vehicle on the road in major incidents. Also free road side thrown in for 2 years + Warranty's purchased through our website.

I opted for the LR Warranty for two reasons:

1. My local dealer is 5mins away so it's convenient. Can't think of a indy specialist within close proximity of my home.

2. the price of warranty inc road assistance is £880 but can be spread over 10 months interest free, so £88 per month is not such a bad hit. Gone: RRS : HSE : TDv6 : 57 : Java Black : Ebony : 20"

i was in the same situation and didn't hesitate to buy the official LR extended warranty at £760 (over 10 installments) which is ex LRA.

If you really think this is a bad bet to place given the hopeless complexity of a RRS (let alone reliability!) then your and my understanding of risk/reward differs somewhat!

I ran my 15 year old Defender on the LR Extended warranty up to last year, but decided that as it has never broken down, and it has had no serious problems in the intervening 12 years of paying, I had spent more in annual extended warranty fees than any repair was going to cost me and cancelled it this year! Car is still running sweetly at 76000 miles and it gets a full non franchised specialist service once a year just before the MOT, even though these days it rarely does more than 3000 miles a year. The most important thing about keeping your modern Land Rover running reliably is to find somebody who knows them but doesn't charge LR Main Dealer labour rates, and there are plenty of non-franchise specialists all over the UK who have the right gear to look after an RRS, all Land Rovers are very complex vehicles (even the low-tech ones) and skrimping/ cutting down on the servicing is not advisable.

R there is an excellent non-franchise specialist at Larbert - the owner and 2 of his staff are Land Rover trained and the owner is now on his 4th new Disco3 which he services himself. I know of 3 Sport owners who take their long out of warranty cars to him and quite a few L322 owners who do the same. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Kam100's warranty offer looks very good, especially alongside the LR one - I could not spot material differences in coverage.

However, I have never extended a warranty on a car or any other white good - I prefer to self insure. My rationale is simple: warranty providers need to make a profit; in a 12 month period some warranty customers will 'win', some will 'lose'. The chances are that the MAJORITY lose, else the insurer does not make money. Given that the policy has exclusions - understandably! - if you add up the cumulative cost of warranties over time then I feel it is inevitable you will spend *less* in self insuring than extended warranties over time (say over five to ten years of car ownership) unless you have pigs luck.

However, if your financial situation is vulnerable to spikes in expeniture, then the peace of mind / financial predictability of a warranty might make sense, just bear in mind the big gotcha: if a compenent fails due to *wear and tear* then you are not covered. This gives the insurer an uncomfortable degree of wiggle room to get out of paying up in my opinion, so you might still end up with a big bill in any case.

Food for thought... Confused

Australia 2005 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Tangiers Orange

I took out the LR Extended warranty for £760 back in March this year, when the 3 month main dealer warranty ran out. Given the car's an ex G4 challenge one and runs on LPG it was always a risk that they wouldn't pay out if something did go wrong. Happily I can say this isn't the case, it recently went in for a load of 'clonks' in the drivetrain / steering to be investigated and came out with about £1500's worth of work being carried out (new rear driveshafts, joints, seals & lower steering shafts).

The only *massive* downside to it was the assessor had to look at / drive it before approving the work, which meant having to wait until he was available. Instead of me being without the car for a week, it ended up being 2 weeks. No huge problem as I had a courtesy freeloader from the dealer, but all the same I'd have preferred him to get his finger out sooner. There is still one item outstanding, but as the assessor 'couldn't hear the noise from the transfer box' that didn't get changed, all it got was new oil. Which is now leaking out all over my drive Rolling Eyes The main thing for me though was the LR dealer aspect. I need the car for work and can't be without it, so just being able to drop it in to a main delaer and pick up a courtesy car is very important to me. It could've cost me a fair bit to hire a car for the 2 weeks it was in and I put 2500 miles on their Freeloader Whistle

All told, for me it's been £760 well spent. Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Not sure how ethical the following is but i did not care as it saved me a large bill:

My old Lexus RX300 needed a new air suspension compressor, but it was driveable and having had a discussion with a main dealer who shall remain nameless i was informed that i was looking at a £1500 bill to replace however if i had an extended warranty it would be covered, i was then taken to one side and advised very quietly that £650 for the extended warranty and bring your car back in 2 weeks and we will sort it Shocked .

Having discussed the situation with a friend i was advised that the dealer received commision on what is basically an insurance policy.

End result, £650 paid out and 2 weeks later new air compressor installed and all fixed. Thumbs Up

Tim - Known problem on the RX300, however what they are superb at is dealing with issues when you have them within warranty without any of the malarky or fobbing of that we read about all the time on here and very good even when out of warranty within reason, for example i had 4 alloys corroding 3 months out of warranty and replaced without a quible of any sort Thumbs Up

PS where is my job application form Thumbs Up

My RRS is also 3 years old in October.

I bought it as an approved, used Land Rover from a Stealer (the fishy one). I recently had it serviced and noticed that the 1st service stamp appears to missing from the service log. I have tried contacting my Stealer about this but unfortunately no response as yet. I was under the impression that all LR approved vehicles would come with a full LR service history.

I am considering extended warranties at the moment but can't help think that the fact that the 1st service was missed is going to cause me a problem (let alone when I come to sell the vehicle).

I am about to give the Dealer some sh*t about this but thought I'd get a few opinions here first, a bit of extra ammunaition if you like.

Thanks in advance,

SM
