Tyres.

I'm considering fitting some snow and ice tyres to the standard hse wheels for this winter, wheels have original wrangler tyres on them but don't want to risk getting stuck if we get a decent snowfall this winter again, or is this just a waste of time and money for on road use?, advice/opinions appreciated, Scott.

Hi, I have the Vredestein Wintac 4 xtreme and they are very good Thumbs Up
I change them when temperature is below 7 degrees. It is much saver not only in snow but also in rainy circumstances.
they are very quiet and I don't feel much difference compared to my summer tyres (Pirelli).

I assume these tyres have a much chunkier tread pattern to cope with deep snow compared to standard road tyres?, was it expensive for a set of four?, thanks, Scott.

Scott have I run on Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice over the last winter (from just after the first very heavy snow when M74 and A9 got closed) until yesterday Embarassed I haven't looked at the Pirelli website but the biggest size they do is 19". I have had no problems running on them even in warm weather. I even have a local Budget tyre centre who changes my wheels at a couple of hours notice and they will do it for free. They also check the balance on each wheel whenever I swap them round...................... I now have 3 sets of wheels and tyres for my RRS - MTRs for offroad, Snow and Ice for the winter and the standard fit 20" for nice weather with no offroading.

BTW I had to have a serious rethink about the value of my Snow and Ice tyres after driving the length of the UK on Dec 22 last year when we had all that heavy snow, with not a hint of loosing grip or slipping on the standard 20's combined with the GGS setting on the TR. On Beattock Summit on the M74 there was nearly 15cms of compacted snow but the RRS on normal tyres kept on going! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

That's interesting Tim, could be wasting my money on snow and ice tyres then, not planning any extreme adventures but as you know central Scotland got some decent snow last winter and would hate to get stuck somewhere, or worse if my wife got stuck.

Scott, don't know how close you are to Stirling, but I got my winter Pirellis from Budget Tyres at 1 Whitehouse Road, Springkerse Industrial Estate. Have always received great service from them and excellent prices/ delivery. They were able to supply snow and ice tyres when the ATS across the park from them didn't even want to order me a set! They have supplied all my Land Rover tyres for the last 10 years, even unusal tyres like BFG Mud Terrains which they only sell about 2 sets a year are easy for them to get "next day" Just be careful as therec is another Budget Tyres in Stirling at Back O'Hill Road next to Sainsbury - don't go anywhere near them they are a bunch of crooks!
The tread on the Pirellis isn't chunky, it's designed to throw the snow out, my V8 runs much more quietly on them than on the 20's and the ride is noticably better on 19's anyway! AND NO scuffed alloys because of the higher side wall of the 19's!

Part of my rubber gear collection!

I have another 2 sets of wheels and tyres for the Defender at the back of the garage too................. do I have a rubber fetish problem?

I'll know who to talk to if I'm ever stuck for a spare wheel Tim, and yes it looks like you have a rubber fetish.
What do you think a set of the pirelli snow and ice would cost in nineteen inch?.

Scott I have no idea what they cost now - mine were bought in November 2007. Suggest you contact forum sponsor AJS Tyres and ask for a figure, tell them you are from RRSport.co.uk as you may get forum discount.
My tyres are 255/50R19 107V but I know that there is also now a 20" version and also if you need them a "run flat" version of the same tyre 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim - As you are the rubber man by the looks of it.

Can you advise - about to change my original tyres 36K miles and still good on the rears at 4mm all round, bought a full set of Hankook Ventus ST RH06 275/40 R20 106 (W speed rated ) XL at £80 each and just noticed they have a M+S marking, does that mean that i have a winter tyre and therefore a softer compound and ultimately will not get as much wear from them as the originals Question

Price has gone up but still a bargain.

Leeds I'm no expert on tyres (or rubber gear 4WD, what is a gimp suit?) I don't know the difference between S&I and (this is difficult to type either way round Mr. Green ) S&M/M&S I notice that my S&I tyres also have M&S (mud and snow) moulded into the sidewall........................ the MTRs and ATRs that I have for my Defender don't have this marking 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim

Thanks for the reply, i googled the review of the tyre and Hankook give an 50K warranty on the tyre and describe it as an all season variant but it does get fantastic reviews.

A gimp suit when i was in the RAF was a full rubber boiler suit that you had to wear when refuelling or working in fuel tanks Thumbs Up

There are a few folks on here who have fitted Hankooks and were pleased with them. Did you try doing a search on here to see what was said? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
