Smoke and strong burning smell

Hi to all new owner of 2006 RRS HSE

Got home tonight after 3 days of ownership to a very strong smell from under the passenger rear wheel. There was smoke and it sounded like a compressor was buzzing.

I started the car and moved it back and forth. Suspension said normal height only due to fault. Smoke has stopped as has noise. I will take it to the main dealer where I bought it tomorrow but was wondering what is there that could cause this ?

P.s. I have a small knock on front suspension so will find out if the mass modification has been done.
My Third RR. P38 Autobiography loads of problems but a great car with a porous block. An L322 4.2 v8. Blew gearbox and now this !

Very happy though as is clean for age and won't half in value like my RS 6 did !

Sounds like the air suspension compressor is over heating, it's located near the rear passenger arch.

Shouldn't produce smoke as well, could be a sticking park brake.

The compressors can become faulty after someone has used it as a jacking point.

Great location by LR!

Thanks for that. I guess with the noise it's the pump. The smoke stopped as I moved the car so I don't think it was the brakes.

I might be lucky and find it's both !

If you bought from a LR Dealer under the used approved scheme, get them to check if the compressor has been damaged from jacking or hitting something in the road.

Either way they should not have supplied it with a faulty air compressor.

Let it cool down for a couple of hours then start the car, can you noticably here the compressor running for more than a couple of minutes? Without any warning lights on.

If yes, it's probably been crushed by jacking.

Happened to mine when I bought it back into 2007, didn't realise until much later. By which time they could get out of replacing by saying it could be caused by anyone, tyre shop etc, jacking incorrectly or hitting an object in the road - had to laugh when they tried that one, and they did admit it was highly unlikely otherwise it would be a bit of a design fault placing the compressor somewhere it could find an obstruction in normal driving.

I made them let me view in the workshop with car raised on the scissor lift.

Either way if you've had it 3 days they shouldnt be able to wriggle out of it. Never mind a goodwill gesture for the car not being checked correctly under the LR approved scheme.

Dealer came and picked it up. Gave me a new Freelander to drive and will report back to me on it. Hopefully they will do the Mass Damper at the same time as I had "the knock"

Good service as you would hope for.
