The previous owner ran an engineering company and the bonnet was hit by hot sparks from a grinder

My mate with the best bodyshop north of Watford is doing the work and I'm making the tea. Four coats of primer next.

I hate to be a killjoy, but I wouldn't let them paint the bonnet on the car like that. Much easier and more sensible to take it off and paint off the car. Mine had to be done last year after some oik threw a brick at the car when I was traveling at 60mph with my daughter and her friend in the car. Thankfully the bonnet got it and not the windscreen. My mate is a professional vehicle repairer and bonnet was done off the car. It's perfect. If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

As long as the car is fully masked up - and even the underneath closed off - so you have no overspray - he'll be fine. Ideally taking it off is better - but it's no big deal either way.

Good luck - and out of interest, what would someone charge to repaint a bonnet? £500???
