Clunking/Knocking Noise from Steering

When I turn the steering wheel from left to right (slowly and abruptly) there is a a loud clunking/knocking noise heard even tavelling at low and high speeds. The noise has only become noticeable after 2 years of ownership (Range Rover Sport SC - 2007).

I took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the noise was a "normal" characteristic of the DR system on the RRS SC? The Technician pulled a fuse and the noise went but surely this just identifies the source of the noise and a fault? I believe there is a LR TSB LS204-012 which gives more details but I have not seen this.

I have also seen posts regarding "knocking" noises heard from the suspension when travelling straight over bumps at low speed (<40 KPH). I also have this and will be taking the vehicle in for inspection.

Your feedback is greatly welcomed.

I can confirm you have the infamous knocking. Your dealer seems to know a little about it and LR do say it's a characteristic. There have been many many TSB's issued by LR and a fair few fixes but as yet I don't think anyone has been 100% satisfied with the fixes. There are many many posts about this on this site, do a quick search and enjoy reading! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Mine also does this. It is not as bad as it was as the dealer has fitted all of the technical bulletins to rectify a 'knock' that came from the suspension. The suspension knock is now cured and the ride and handling is now superb. However, if i deliberately rock the steering left and right, I can force an audible knock to appear. But, this is not as prevalent as it was - and it does not bother me anymore.

2 of my mates RRS's also do this but they were both completely unaware of it until I demonstrated it to them. My view? Best left alone if the suspension, ride and handling are otherwise excellent. If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

Thanks for the feedback.

The handling, I feel, has gone sloppy and not as sharp as it used to be - but I haven't driven another RRS to compare against. Also tyre pressures can vary pretty quickly out here with the change in temperture. Last week was +39 degreesC and now 31!
