Knocking out of warranty

My RRS TDv8 is three years old in 3 weeks time and so end of warranty worries loom large.

This vehicle has always been prone to the dreaded "knocking" from the front end. She has had her fourth major "operation" today to "cure" the problem - using the latest "this will definitely sort it out sir" fix from LR. Apparently each of these fixes has cost LR around £1,000 in dealer time to install. As the fixes so far have only achieved temporary easing of the knock - I am very concerned that the problem will reocurr soon after the current warranty finishes. I have told my dealer that as LR have not been able to find a cure yet then the problem should still be fixed FOC out of the warranty period on the basis that the original problem arose in the warranty period. Dealer says unlikely that LR will agree to that and is trying to sell me a £1,000 extended LR warranty product instead.

Should I :

Take the chance
Buy an extended warranty
Scream and scream and scream until I am sick if the knock comes back - until they fix it again
Sell the car now RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Time for a nice Ipanema TDv6HSE to match the D4 Smarticus. Its a lovely colour for the RRS. Might as well let the dealer have to cover the cost of the knock repairs when the next owner complains about it! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I would think that as long as the problem was reported during the warranty period its LR's responsibility to fix it, even if it takes the next five years! Smile

Surely this issue is filed under warranty claims in the dealer's books - so if they have not settled the claim its their problem, not yours!!! Malaysia Boleh!

regardless of the extended warranty (which you may take for security on other parts failing) for this and any other outstanding issue I would at least put a "legalistic" letter to the dealer telling them that they are outstanding, and that they are obliged to continue to attempt to remedy them for however long they continue to be outstanding.

If you don;'t have written correspondence of such, then include all of the history todate in this letter, including the original date you raised the issue, and the dates you have confirmed that there attempts thus far have not been successful. You may need to fall back on this correspondence to protect yourself legally!

Clearly the key matter you need to demonstrate is that it is one issue, that has been continuously not resolved, and not lots of new issues that are similar, and resolved each time you reported them. If the dealer, or moreso Land Rover can claim that they solved your issue, and that you are claiming a completely new (but similar) issue outside of warranty, then liability for cost is with you..

All of this is my laymans understanding and opinion for what its worth, I am in not legally qualified to offer firm advice! Whistle

Tim - I still love my TDv8 and it wouldn't look or feel right to be lashing out big bucks on a new one just now. Plan is to keep her for a couple more years yet. And BTW, the TDv8 is sooo much more fun than the TDv6 in the D4. Granted the v6 is impressive - but it does have to work a lot harder at going fast - whereas the v8 just laps it up like a kitten on the cream.

Bobby and 2R - sound advice - letter drafted and in post tomorrow Thumbs Up RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Just out of curiosity what have lr done so far to cure your knock?, the reason im asking is mine was back in at lr yesterday to have "new body shock" absorbers fitted, its already had new arb bushes which didnt cure the problem, thanks.

Scott - LR fairly regularly issue revised procedures and parts for "curing" the knock. I didn't even bother asking them what the latest version is - but it took 2 days to fit and seems to have tightened up the steering and whole front end dynamic a fair bit. I will call the LR workshop manager on Monday to find out what they have actually done this time. But - so far (but only about 50 miles far) so good. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

That is good to hear S, so many people have asked if the TDv8 is still relevant now that the 3.0litre has such similar outputs. There's still life in the TDV8 yet then! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Smarticus, get everything well documented.

If the fault occurs within the warranty period and is not properly rectified it is LR's responsibility to put right even if the warranty period has expired Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

I have this knocking sound on my RRS SC for the first few miles, then it seems to settle down.
Is this common on a 'cold' car or should I be paying a visit to the dealer - now that I have extended the warranty?

Zoo - the dealer has explained that particular phenomena as the "noise" created by the cold hydraulic oil running through the Active Cornering system. Active Cornering uses hydraulics to enhance the anti roll characteristics on each side of the vehicle as you corner. Apparently when that oil is cold first thing in the morning, as it moves through the hydraulic plumbing it can create a knocking noise and sensation through the front of the vehicle (beneath the front foot well). LR would (and do) describe this as a "design feature which is characteristic of the vehicle" rather than a "design fault which is a weakness with the vehicle" . However, if your vehicles knock is only limited to this and no knocking for the rest of the day / journey - then I guess you could live with it. I dont think LR has a cure for that anyway. My vehicles knocking made the whole front end sound (and slightly feel) "loose" - the sort of thing that if it was on a Defender would leave you looking for badly worn ball joints, a loose damper or coil spring, or a well worn steering rack. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini
