LONDON-NEWCASTLE

Last time was up there had a meeting and went up and back on the train - hated it. train broke down twice, changed twice because of it.

So if I have an 11am meeting, finish at 2pm, whats the best option??

Train, Car or Plane? I'd rather drive but other half thinks I'm crazy......

Easy flight up, but then getting to the airport, hanging about etc not always worth it for such a small distance. Driving is a no-no imho - what, 4hrs up and 4hrs down on a good day? Train looks pretty tempting after all that...

Flight's pretty cheap though if you don't mind wasting the dead time at the airport.

Train will be easier as I can't see it breaking down like the last time you went

but with the low cost airline it might be worth a look, with hand luggage you virtually just be able to walk straight on

how close is the meeting to airport/train station for taxis

Everytime my wife has dragged me on public transport it has broken down, been delayed or not run!

Even the thought of public transport makes me break out in a cold sweat.

Laughing Laughing

I wonder if there's a train forum, where you only ever hear about train's breaking down leading to the unfounded belief that trains are unreliable? Laughing

I used to have site meetings in Peterlee almost every week, not that far from Newcastle. I hate hanging around at airports, being squashed into a small seat on a plane, feeling like a sheep being herded on and off. The train is OK at best, but oh so boring! For me its a nice feeling not having to depend on anyone else and to just be able to drive door to door at your own pace. I also enjoy driving so that helps. You have a nice car so why not drive it?

Thumbs Up Laughing

I'm surprised that British Rail (or whoever the privateers are) haven't taken a leaf out of Land Rovers book by stating "They all do that, its a characteristic of the design"

Car Thumbs Up much more flexible.

(I know Leeds isnt as far, but New Years Eve we drove Leeds to London - Froze on Westminster Bridge for 5 hours - London to Leeds in 14 hours and contemplated continuing to Edinburgh for an early lunch.
Was so easy in the RRS, not a bit tiring.)

Thanks - 1st class ticket is only £30 more than a normal one - problem is last time I went I spent £80 on taxis as the site for my visit is way out in the sticks and had to keep taxis waiting....and also I'd have to carry building boots and a hard hat on the train! Better just having them in the RRS! My head says train, but heart says RRS!!

Thought of that too, and I remember looking into it some time ago - I used to have a PA that sometimes drove me.....but takes too much time out of someone elses day - but in terms of chauffeur for daily hire - don't think such services exist....would be a good one though......and what would you pay someone to drive 800 miles in a day for you??? £200??

There are chauffeur for a day services - I used to have a friend who hired one for every England match at Twickenham. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
