Dealer Servicing - A total Scam?

Ok, so since 2004 and the block exemption ruling, any competent garage can service your Range Rover in warranty using genuine parts and it does NOT void the LR Warranty on the car. The bonus being you save pots of cash. Not many people do it though cos of the stigma of not having a LRSH stamped book.

When you actually examine what they do in a service its not that much, the parts are not too expensive, its mainly oil, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter and every 3 years some brake fluid. Plus they'll look for as many things as possible to do ontop like your brake pads and wiper blades. Evil or Very Mad

Why do we pay £500+ to go to a dealer when the garage down the road will do it for £150?

I've just booked mine in for it's 70K service (Inspection1) at a local garage, they buy the parts from my local Dealer and its all under a 12 month gaurantee on all work carried out. They are also replacing my brake fluid and the price?

£165 all in
. Thumbs Up

Ihad my first service done at Doug Dransfield near Sheffield 3 weeks ago , Apart from being half a mile from my home, it was fast ,no fuss, and only £220 all in with genuine parts, this included £49 for a boot closing motor thingy ,that I could have had done free at the dealer under warranty, but its just too much hassle for me to go and look at thier docile faces down at the dealer. 08 HSE,5%TINTS, Factory tow bar, brum ,brum

one of the chaps over on freel2.com looked at this and the dealer said that they also check the paintwork on the car too and if you don't have this done you void the paintwork warranty Rolling Eyes

The dealer could do it, but wanted to charge £70 do do the paintwork inspection.

Obviously the dealer doesn't have to do the service, but are they legally able to say you void the warranty on the paintwork if somebody whose not wear a LR overall does the inspection.

If so its another money making con by the dealer Censored

I know a few years back the Gov said that the car manufacturers can't hold you to having a service done with them!

Like others have said as long as they us LR or what ever car you have parts it's all good Thumbs Up

Lets face it, your out to buy a new car, you see two that your very keen on, one has a dealer stamped service book and the other has stamps from various independants, which one are you going to buy? The problem I have with the world we live in today is I have checked service history myself on cars I was looking at buying only to be told by the service manager that the car has never been serviced by them!!! It's very easy to duplicate a stamp in a service book, I always verify the history of a car by calling up the dealer. Speed Limits! not where I live!

Back in the 90's when I had a 318is the BMW main dealer in Bristol stamped the bodywork warranty part of the service book required to maintain the 'perforation warranty' and marked no problems sighted. I wrote them a letter asking how they had missed the rust now appearing for about 1 meter along the inside seem of the boot lid. CC'd letter to BMW GB and got new boot lid forthwith!

Bottom line is don't assume a main dealer is performing the service schedule to the letter!

When I was ringing around my local dealers to get quotes the one nearest to me rang after I had booked it into my independent. I said I had needed a quote but it was too late, so she asked how much I was paying. I told her, which then followed a barrage of slagging off which included:

They can't be using the right parts
    They won't use genuine parts
They will be using the 'wrong' oil Surprised

She bleated on and then I told her they were genuine parts bought FROM THEIR DEALERSHIP, Very Happy how can the oil be 'wrong' if its the right grade and has a brand name and that the work was all covered under a 12 month warranty on parts and labour!

I then told her that for the price I was also getting the brake fluid changed. She could not beleive it! Very Happy Very Happy

I thought her reaction was very unprofessional, instead of just saying "we can't match it" she went on to make herself look a total arsehead. L319 D4 HSE

I've had this before from BMW dealerships... the place where I got my car from strangely bend all ways to do a deal over the purchase of a car, but their service dept are massive ripoff merchants. So I take it to another (nearer) main dealer for servicing who consistently undercut my supplying dealer by about £150. I think it might be that my supplying dealer is in Cobham and therefore supplies to premier league footballists.

Hmmm....

LR recently offered 3 years free servicing over here. I managed to get it as part of a "corporate package" It will be interesting to see if there are "exclusions" when the time comes.

Anyone had their "free" service yet? Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Yes got the 3 yrs free servicing and had the first service back in April..

MLR were very professional and curtious and no problems so far. I have no reason to doubt that they did anything but a thorough job per LR's schedule, but without trying to completey check myself immediately afterwards I would have no idea if they missed anything!

Does the really cheap garage have the LR diagnostics? In my experience if they do they charge main dealer prices, if they don't how do they do a full service? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

I had my last service done by JE in Coventry.

They do have dealer diagnostics
They do not charge dealer prices.

By the same token....

Pete Bell also has all the dealer kit (and more)
and is significantly lower cost than LR

There are alternatives to Madam Landrover.

Have you actually asked what they do on a service? Most of it is oil and filter changes, check brake pads and discs, paint for corrosion (sometimes) and then they look for other things they can sting you for. The only reason they'd need to use the diagnostics is if there was an issue they needed to investigate.

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

From A LOT of past experience, a visit to the dealer more than not results in MORE problems. L319 D4 HSE

I use a non franchise Land Rover specialist like RRUK and my experiences have been the same - all genuine parts
purchased either from BritPart or direct from the local LR dealer, same bought I bought the Defender from supplies the parts to the specialist, the difference in labour/VAT between franchised and non-franchised is the main difference in the price - £100 an hour+ per hour from a franchised dealer versus £33ph for the speicalist. The specialist has all the workshop kit that the main dealer has, his labourforce were trained at the main-dealers and by Land Rover and are all 'approved' LR. In part defense of the main delears - they have to hold vast stocks of spares and maintain the LR corporate image and that doesn't come for free. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW
