Mileage correction? can you tell

Everyone knows it goes on, it's even legal unless you do it for gain, but, on the RRS is there any way of telling if the mileage has been altered, would it be stored somewhere, (the original mileage), or would the ECU show that someones been in there tampering.

If for some reason you changed the clocks or binnacle you might want the mileage reset to original.

in a old car I had (Kia Sportage Cool )the binical was replaced after 2000 miles after some motor bike damage and the mileage was wiped off when i got the car back 4 months later, I asked for it adjusting back and the insurance company refused due to the addtional cost involved Shocked

I suppose 2k is neither here nor there, but 20k starts to misrepresent the age/use of the car. I don't suppose the insurance company would have dismissed it so quickly then Wink

With these digital odos you'd think the actual mileage value would be stored in one of the control units somewhere rather than in the binnacle itself - that way if you need to replace the binnacle for any reason, it simply picks up the existing value and voila! But what do I know? Wink

i agree that there is a memory, but when people do correct the mileage do they also wipe the memory, or , like your computer, you may think you've wiped everything off, but it's still there somewhere, just needs someone with the right knowledge and software to find it.
I know on certain makes of car the mileage, amongst other things, is stored in a few different places, just in case of corruption of one unit you still have a back-up.

A good dealer should be able to check the mileage as I believe the ecu of abs and other safety devices store the mileage of the car ( its what my friend at the local dealer informed me of). RRS TDV8 HSE 2007- JAVA Black/Black interior,

Ok, Guess I'm being a bit vague, as posted on here I'm very close to owning a rrs, just having a service before I pick it up, it's a private sale.
Anyway, it's quite low mileage, nothing wrong with that, but obviously i carried out the normal checks, and i always start with a history check through any dealers it might have been in to, this brought up a mileage discrepancy, but this was explained by a main, well known dealer as an input error and they sent me a copy of the job card where the info was copied from, ( they had actually wrote the job number where the mileage should have been, and this was transfered onto their records ).
I have also got in writing a letter from the managing director of another well known main dealer explaining this, seeing as the car had gone through their dealership before being purchased by it's current owner.
So you can see why I ask the question, although I have everything in writing to back up the explanation I would just like to be 100% sure that the car has not been tampered with.

Doesn't look like you've got much to worry about - given the discrepancy has been explained by two sources?

they answer is yes it can be done, the vehicle does store it in multiple places 99% of the time its 3 separate locations

ECU, Control Unit Convenience module or similar
Dash
Key

As long as the person performing the correction knows what he is doing, you or LR will never know. There are tell tale signs, checking info with dealers, oil water ect in relation to last service. Condition report from last MOT get your miss marple hat on Laughing

Believe me I've got that many hats on I can't get through the door, as said, this was picked up by doing a dealer check, the car is in perfect condition, ( as you would expect from a car with 25K on the clock ), the mot check was fine.
I have just spoke to a LR dealer and they have told me that it's not stored anywhere that they can get at to check.

1. user on here Bobby will tell you if there is any way to know (he is our LR inside man, as well as others)

2. look at the seats, carpets and pedal rubbers - they are a good giveaway to high mileage.. what is the discrepancy we are dealing with? 10k vs 15k, or 10k vs 50k?
