Technically speaking, there's no 4x4 that comes close to a g-wagen. The extra thick steel skin, 3 diff-locks etc, strong diffs, drive shats etc- it's what the defender could have become if LR developed it properly. Even has airbags . What else combines hard core off-road ability with mod cons and huge performance (in the newer ones)?

I guess, like Misery said, either you get it or you don't. I can see why it's not to all tastes.

Fair enough. If you're that hardcore enough into offroading, you'd probably have a Unimog
