CONTINENTAL 4x4 Sports Contact 20" Tyres - RRS TDV8 HSE

Hi, just back from the dealer after noticing significant wear on tyre shoulders on front two tyres - RR dealer fitted in May done 3000 miles and replaced the original tyres that had done 20000 miles.
Tyres are Continental 4x4 Sports Contacts and dealer tells me that this is normal wear pattern - the shoulders of the tyres on the front are now almost bald - and certainly would be illegal if measured by the Police.

The dealer has now shown me EPQR SSM 37759 that states this is normal behaviour for the tyre and not a warranty issue or fault.

Any views, thoughts or similar reports?

Thanks, Colin

Wear on my Contis, done approx 6k, is similar. Shoulders are right through the tread pattern.
Been advised that this is normal wear, usually only the outside shoulder ,insides look like new.
As legal reqs are 1.6m across centre 75% of tread, checked mine on this basis and all good. Centre has 5mm and tyres are at correct pressures.
They don't look pretty though for their initial cost and mileage covered.

This is normal wear.

Your tyres are not illegal Exclamation

Only vehicles over 3500kg require thread across the whole of the tyre.

Vehicles up to that weight which includes the RRS are required to have 1.6mm tread across the centre 75% or 2/3rds of the tyre Exclamation

The only thing that would change that is if the core starts to appear or there are any cuts. Never seen it happen.

They don't look pretty but hey ho. Police will not prosecute and if they try through lack of knowledge they will end up looking very stupid and Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed TDV6 - gone

thanks for the replies guys, set my mind at rest, don't think I'd go for the conti's again.....the Pirelli's I had previous still looked like new when they came off - even wear and good condition on the walls and shoulders.
Thanks, Colin

My TDv8 is nearly 2 years old and done 20000 miles mainly on rural black top and my Pirellis Assymetricos still have 4mm MINIMUM and have even wear. Ran Contis on my TDV6 and they also lasted well. Best tyres I ever had were BF Goodrich All Terrains on my Defender - ran to 63000 miles before I changed them to a set of BFG MTRS, and I sold them on to somebody else because there was plenty of tread left for onroad use but off road they were getting a bit "exciting" on wet grass. My 1st Disco, a V8i ES, ran on Avon Turbospeeds and it did 58000 miles on the original tyres. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My Conti's the same. Shoulders almost bald, inside looks fairly new. They are noisy and have been looking
at Hankooks and Toyo ST's for replacements. Both have received excellent reviews. mike murphy

thanks for all the comments. Dealer checked and all OK and legal, shoulder wear is 'normal' as per your comments and the comments from the dealer. Although I wouldn't go for the Conti's again, sounds like there's a couple of better options, let's see if these tyres last out for another 18K miles Surprised

IIRC LR no longer fit Contis on the production line - my TDv8 came on Pirelli Scorpion Assymetricos which are not my favourite tyre but have lasted quite well! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Contis are fitted standard to the XC90 and everyone over there complains about the excessive tyre wear. Some as low as 6000 miles before replacement. Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.
