Locking differential

One of the options offered is an Active rear locking differential and I wondered if this was a useful thing to have. Has anyone got one and is it an advantage to have if stuck, or a waste of money.

When ordering the RRS I got a bit carried away ticking boxes, and am beginning to think it could be an expensive toy rather than a useful addition.

How much do you plan on taking it off road? If lots then yes its worth while. Also from your location I'm guessing you get a lot of snow? It will also be useful for that.

If you live in a town/city and never venture off road then its not worth while at all. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Thanks Richard, I think it could prove to be a useful choice.

You are aware that you have no control over it, it is fully automatic and engages and disengages when it needs to, not when you want it to. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

No I wasn't Tim thanks for that, it is probably a better idea than relying on myself to control it. For once I am looking forward to some snow so I can give the RRS a good test.

The tyres on the car will probably make the biggest difference. Did you go for 20" wheels? Mine struggled in the snow. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Yes I did go for the 20'' Richard. Are there any good winter tyres available for the 20'' wheels, I just thought similar tyres would be available for 19'' and 20'' wheels.

Must check to see what winter tyres are available.

Vredestein wintrac 4 extreme is a good winter tyre and they do it in 275.40.20 size, i have a set ready for winter on 19" rims though. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I found the same tyre as yours in 20'' size on Tyremen's web site, but oddly enough it is not advertised in Vredestein's web site so not sure if they were old stock.

Plan "B"

Land Rover advertise their "Snow Traction System" part No. LR005737 in 20 inch size for the RRS. Does anyone have experience of these fancy snow chains, are they any good? If they work well and easy to fit and remove they would be an ideal alternative for the short spells of snow we get.

Nokians (made in Finland) cost even less than the Vredesteins and very good in the snow and rain and they are very quiet as well. Thumbs Up SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE BUG AND SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE WINDSHIELD

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Last winter I drove mine from Southampton (the day after Bassingstoke was cut off from the known world) to Stirling on the stock 20's and had no problem even on the M74/A74 that was covered with between 10 and 15cms of snow and had not been ploughed or salted.................................. I changed over to my 19" Pirelli Ice and Snow tyres between Christmas and New Year and I would say if you have the stock Pirelli 20's which are Mud and Snow tyres you will be OK but I would not like to have been running the Craptinentals my old TDv6 had been fitted with. The Grass, Gravel and Snow setting of the TR worked a treat over Beattock Summit. I know that Alicatt drove the A9 from Inverness to Hull the same night and he was running 19" MTR's and also had no issues even going over the Drummocheter Pass in driving snow just before the snow gates were closed. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

What is concerning me I guess is I have 3 miles of single track road to drive before reaching the main road, with a few short steep hills. I would hate to get stuck in a "go anywhere" vehicle and block the road completely, to the annoyance of some and the amusement of others.

My lucky day!

I've just been offered a set of 19" alloys from a 9 month old Range Rover including tyres for £500. I am not sure what condition the tyres are in but the wheels will be ideal for winter use, while keeping the 20" ones for summer use. Laughing

Seemed to be too good a bargain to miss to me, unless I'm informed otherwise in the meantime.

To be honest how good a deal it is really depends on what tyres are fitted and how much tread they have left. If they are the 2010 19" wheels that would be good. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award
