I'm ashamed of many of the site members - they spend hours on here and contribute financially nothing. We know who you are.

Another SW - it is not people like you I'm getting at. We welcome users who come and go, get some useful information and pass some on. The members of this forum who post hundreds of posts but contribute little are the ones I'm getting at.

If you're wealthy enough to own and run an RRS then I've no doubt you're wealthy enough to run a web site as a hobby. With all due respect Another SW, this site costs significantly more than yours to keep running.

I understand it is costing you money but seriously, with all the sponsors and few people donating by the sounds of it your still well short?!. Whats the reason the costs are so high? Its not like its a video site eating bandwidth.

Or maybe forget the idea of trying to make a living out of it? I don't have any site sponsors and I don't charge for advertising on my forum. Hosting and domain charges, with sufficient bandwidth for around 250 users online at any time, are just over £100 per annum - and that's only because I chose a 'paid for' forum package to protect my members from spammers. If you don't get more than that from your current sponsors, they are having a laugh! There are also numerous free solutions out there if you don't mind advertising popping up on the pages from time to time. It is a nicely laid out site and everything, but charging private users for anything is a non-starter IMO... If you are not happy to run it for love (and a bit of pocket money from Trade advertisers) then it's probably time to let it go... |

While I’m aware that this thread is not about introducing a subscription & is instead just asking for a donation to the site when listing an item for sale. I do suspect that this discussion is inevitably going to go down the road of subscriptions.

I kind of have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand I have no problem with Martin recovering costs towards the web site or even making a bit on top.

hoppy - we have tried to get donations with limited success. We offer branded goods and the take up is small. We have done days out and whilst some have worked others have failed due to lack of interest. If everyone simply bought a sticker or gave a small donation things would continue as they are but TBH getting even the smallest donations from some members of this forum is like getting water from a stone. We should all look at disco3.co.uk to see how ready members are to donate money (or things) when they realise the time, money and effort these sites save them, and whilst we don't expect everyone to donate we certainly should expect more than we currently get. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Is PayPal the only way to donate or can we use a credit card payment? I don't like to use Pay Pal as I was once ripped off for a few thou through using it on Fleabay. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Yeah, that'll work... Insult your customers and expect the donations to come flooding in... Time for you guys to come out of your insular little World and have a look around on the Internet... Take 911uk.com for example: 16,000 plus members, more free advice than anyone could possible have a use for, absolutely free for anyone to use and advertise anything as long as it is a private sale (including cars), the members organise great events that 911uk doesn't get a single penny from, and the site is growing all the time... The infrastructure is a lot more sophisticated than this 'off-the-shelf' forum software and the whole thing is paid for by Trade Advertisers and Sponsors (who mostly give member's discounts as well) - and always has been. It even earns the site owner a few quid. If you can't cover your costs from just ONE sponsor, then it's time you looked around for a new forum provider... |
