I'm running Pirelli's on my TDv8 and they are wearing very well - 6mm remaining after 16500miles , I had factory issue Continentals on my TDv6SE and they were hardly worn at 22000 miles when I sold the car, despite having had a little bit of offroad use as well as normal day to day use. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'm still on the originals from the factory! BUT in October 2007 I paid £176 a piece for 4 Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice 255/50V19's for winter use. I would suggest Googling them and seeing what is available online. There is also a company that some forum members use - A.J Tyres or something. Very Annoyed recommends them usually.

One thing not to buy are the apparently "great value" Chinese tyres that are being offered around - Autocar tested several Chinese brands against (I think) Continentals recently and while the Chinese tyres were a lot cheaper they were far inferior for grip in both the wet and the dry and braking distances in one case was something like 3 times the distance achieved with the Conti's The tests were carried out using the same last generation Golf GTi for each brand of tyre, so it wasn't different tyres on different cars 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

But if you can get budget tyres that are also good at doing a job, no reason why you shouldn't buy them....
