They actually change the expansion tank (where the sensor float is located) if I remember correctly... I don't think it's an overly difficult job.

I think this might be a warranty job, wasn't there a run of duff sensors or tanks? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

they supply sensor separate now and was trying to establish how it works etc and where on tank it sits

Yes, a TSB was issued in early 2008 advising that if there was no signs of coolant loss and if the sensor float has not sunk, then it was not necessary to replace the whole coolant expansion tank. Only the low level coolant switch located at the bottom of the expansion tank needed to be replaced.
