got stuck. got rescued. post mortem... what went wrong?

got stuck...

got rescued...

surface was a clay like substance, fairly solid.. managed to hit a wet patch and sink about 6 inches. All power was being sent to the rear driver-side wheel which span, a lot. Played with the Terrain Response and changed to low ratio.. didn't help. It didnt appear that I could manually lock either the rear or centre diff.. is this by desgin? Seems as though this would have got me out of trouble (locking diffs) but doesnt appear to be selectable?

any advice?

thx

rrsboy - I think the best advice is to know what your driving into - really that simple

Alternatively, lower pressure in the tryes to dsitribute the RRS weight a little better

Your tyres are Censored for mud.

To help - should have had DSC off, low ratio engaged, mud and ruts on the TR and lower tyre pressures. Driving a D3 or RRS off-road is a bit different from older 4x4s - you have to learn how to let the electronics do their thing. Personally, I find the e-diffs to be much more useful than traditional manual lockers, but this was only after I played around a bit to learn how they work best. Did you see the diffs lock on the 4x4 info screen?

Since you're in the UK, maybe go along to an off-road meet with the D3 lot from disco3.co.uk? I think forum member 'tenforcash' runs off-road training sessions as well. If you do a search, there is an explanation somewhere of what the different TR modes do, which can help you choose which one to use, before you get stuck.

Full marks for getting her dirty though! Thumbs Up

thanks guys. From speaking to a few 'in the know' it sounds like still having DSC on caused most of the problem... with it off then 90% chance of getting out that mess on my own.. we live and learn!

in conclusion, there is no way to manually lock the diffs on the current RRS?

p.s.
VA - yes, tyres massively out of balance.. couldnt drive above 40mph!! Kwik Fit kindly removed, cleaned and rebalanced all four for £25.

No, but there's no need to. Some TR programs (Rock crawl & mud and ruts) preload the diff locks to engage earlier - they can engage/disengage hundreds of times a second as and when needed.

BTW, are you sure you have the rear diff-lock option, could you see the padlock symbol turning red on your screen?

Leo - is there a way for me to find out, without driving back into the mud? Laughing

edit
when I engage some of the TR choices, an open padlock appears in the center of the rear 'axle' (and the diff betweeen front & back)

Read this: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic28010.h...+diff+lock

There's a link within that thread that has photos of what to look for. Thumbs Up

tbh, your tyres look like slicks in the photos above - when there's no traction at all 4 wheels, you aren't going anywhere. I'll take a guess and say you're on Continental sport contacts?

I'm no offroading expert, but it's events like this where we learn from our mistakes which can only be A Good Thing. It also shows us that however clever our cars become, we still need to know how to use them to get the best from them Thumbs Up

Also something to remember for the next time you venture into the wilds - before leaving the hard standing remove the plastic covers that hide the front and rear recovery points.............................. means you don't have to kneel in the mud, getting your hands and clothes really wet and dirty, trying to get the two snap-screws that hold them in place undone after you have got stuck. Also if you have room in the bootspace remove the spare from under the car and secure it to the securing rings in the boot - means you don't have to dig it out from under the car if you get a flat in the mud too. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
