I think the only really fair way to spread the road tax burden fairly is to put the whole cost onto the price of fuel. That way everybody pays their fair share. If you only do a few thousand miles per year you don't pay so much tax. If you are a high mileage driver you pay more road tax.

Even foreign drivers would have to pay their bit towards the upkeep of the road systems. Whether that be foreign haulage drivers in the UK or British holiday drivers in Europe. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Oh don't I know it Big Cry

€1204.00 annually, €668.00 for six months or €340 for 3 months Thud

Thankfully though, my RRS was registered prior to July 1st. As any car registered after that date has it's road tax calculated on Co2 emissions. Meaning that the annual road tax on an RRS is now €2,000.00 Shocked

BTW Totally agree with TB's suggestion. I've long thought it to be the fairest way of doing road tax Thumbs Up

But there is a flaw in TB's method (which I also think is the fairest way to make them that do the most polluting, road wearing out etc pay the most) - no government anywhere ever sees the common-sense way of doing things as being the way they want to do them, irrespective of their politics all governments cannot see their way to doing things the sensible way. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Too true Tim. All politicians seem to have their "Common Sense" gene removed as soon as they are elected. Confused Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Guernsey 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue

In the Uk they were always worried that they would not have a tax disc to show that it had insurance, and the police clung to that idea and still do. the world has moved on and now they can look it all up on computer within seconds.

Here in Guernsey they switched to taxing fuel from Jan 08, 29p per litre on diesel, still 20 or so pence cheaper than the UK. Now instead of a tax disc we have an insurance disk in the front windscreen. (Well we have to now from this Jan, they forgot to pass the law for the change last year. All that common sense must of overwhelmed them

funny thing is though everytime you went to tax your car you always had a big queue and 2-3 people doing it, but not one redundancy, wonder what they do now?
