What’s life like with a set of Stormers ??

I’m seriously considering treating “Rupert” to a set of Stormers.

But before I do I wouldn’t mind some feedback from those of you already running a set, so see what they are like to live with on a day to day basis. Particularly anyone who’s put on a set to replace the OEM rims. Ie. SE or HSE owners.

How’s the ride quality been affected???

Do the 20” rims create a choppy ride on rough roads & do they pull all over the place on a badly cambered road ??

Also do they tend to end up being badly beaten up & scratched with “Kerb Rash” ??

This will represent a fairly hefty investment, so I’d like to make an informed decision here.

Any & all opinions welcomed guys Thumbs Up

I remember when Supertrotter changed from his HSE 19s to 20s and said the ride was noticeably harder, but it clearly hasn't been so bad he's had to revert back to the 19s. Don't expect them to survive at all if you take your RRS offroad - they will get damaged. Also, the general consensus is that you should shoe your Stormers with 295 rubber rather than the 275 that would come from the factory - this gives the rim a bit more protection from kerbs etc.

At the end of the day, they do look MUCH better than the standard alloys Thumbs Up

The off-road issue won’t effect me too much really, as I’d be doing nothing too serious at all. But if I need them I’ll still have my SE rims to fall back on.

I drove a TDV8 HSE today with a set on it & the ride didn’t seem to be too badly affected, a bit choppier alright compared to my own, but not as sharp as the BMW 535d MSport I drove on Monday
(sorry shmoogle Whistle )

But I wonder is the suspension set up different on the HSE / TDV8 to compensate for the larger rim ?

That’s very interesting about your advice re: the 295’s over the 275’s. I’ve been pricing tyres & a mate of mine in the business can get me a great deal on Pirelli 295’s with a saving of Eur 500 over the 275 Conti’s Shocked

So we were going to look into how comfortable a 295 would sit on the 9.5 rim. But now it looks like they should be fine.

DO IT they look the muts and especially with 295's on

I retro fitted a set with 295x40x20's and the ride is much better than the 275x40x20's that were on my previous sport, partly because the profile being a 40 is bigger on the 295's (something to do with the overall circumference)

They sit very nicely on the stormers, fill the arch and give extra protection to the wheels

They handle very well indeed with the extra width and don't seem to tram line, where i live i travel down country lanes all the time and would say that they are excellent Thumbs Up

If you want some close up pics let me know and i will do it later some of my Previous cars

I think I'll just stay out of that one guys Whistle Very Happy

Cheers ENVOY !

Yeah given that I can get a good deal on the 295's & from what you say about a better ride quality & more protection to the rim (what have I just said Shocked ) that's the way I'll go.

"Tram Line" that's the term I just couldn't remember.

I only got to drive the Stormer equipped TDV8 around the block & while I tried to seek out some rough surfaces, I didn’t really get a definitive feel of the set up. But it certainly didn’t strike me immediately as being a choppy ride, as some cars do.

Another question……..

How do you find the 20’s when driving through standing water at the side of the road ??

I ask this as there are times that my 18’s pull in a rather alarming manner, when going through what is sometimes only a bit of water lying at the roadside.

My D3 did this also with 18’s on, whereas our D2 could literally plough through a small lake at 60Mph no bother to it.

But I’d hate to exacerbate the situation even further by putting on the 20’s.

Edited to add:

I’ve had a look at your gallery ENVOY & the Stormers do look pretty cool Cool

From what I can see the 295’s sit very well on the rims too.

That can be down to tyre choice, the 16" rims fitted with Dunlop Grand Treks on my Landcruiser were a nightmare in the wet, motorway driving was like taking you life in your hands and every puddle was best avoided. At the first opertunity I had, I changed them to Yokohama SD05 Super Diggers and that transformed the vehicle both in the wet and the dry and totaly got rid of the tramlining and aquaplaning, also they were great off road. Yokohama stopped making the SD05 and the last set of tyres I put on it were Geolanders but they were not a patch on the SD05 but still miles better than the Dunlops that were original fitment.

Mmmmmm !

I can’t remember what tyres were on the D3, the RRS has Pirellis on at the moment.

Which would be the same make, albeit with a different pattern, to what I would be putting on the Stormers.

Must see if I have photos of the D3 out of curiosity, that I might be to see what tyres were on it, I don’t think they were Pirellis.

I do seem to recall someone telling me that a D3 with the base model 17” rims didn’t suffer from this, whereas the ones with 18” rims fitted does. Confused
