Frozen Tailgate

Whenever we have a cold spell (ie anything below zero) the locking mechanism on the tailgate seems to freeze up. You can push the black button in but nothing happens, as soon as the car defrosts then it seems to be fine again. Is this a problem anyone else has (i'm guessing not because it would be pretty pointless to have a car thats designed to travel in some of the worlds toughest conditions as long as you don't want to get in the boot) and secondly does anyone know how to actually get to the mechanism so i can give it a good spray with WD40 and see if that improves things - i imagine you get to it by removing the interior trim of the tailgate but i'd lke confirmation of that before i go pulling it all apart Smile

Never had the issue, however, don't the WD40 cans come with straws these days?? If so, stick it in and squirt, always works for me Whistle Whistle Thumbs Up L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!

The back right door handle on my S Class always freezes up and you can't open it, then if you really force the issue, you cant close it again! took it in today, and they sprayed it with WD40 and asked me to monitor the situation... so let's see.. Give it a go with your boot too.. never know..

tried using the straw to squirt some wd40 but it was too tight to get in ( Shocked ) think it requires a more liberal spraying than just a little squirt Wink

thanks kam i'll just try spraying everything related to the tailgate and see if that helps - the prcie of WD40 should go through the roof with the amount i'm using Laughing

Just had this happen to me on a long trip to the midwest and I found a spray can of de-icer at one of the gas stations. Worked like a charm, immediately freed up the stuck button and I used it on the door latches as well. PJPR

Anyway - the norm for COLD weather here is to coat ALL the rubber door seals with Turtle Wax Silicon Fluid (directly translated) a special silicon liquid especially made for the use, and regularly if it is gets very cold, but always BEFORE if you must wash the car in freezing weather. Also a graphite lock oil to prevent freezing or a normal (thin) lock oil spray to unlock frozen locks. NEVER use warm water to release a frozen lock unless you can warm the whole car up to dry it out afterwards - the locks may not open or close if you do. ........

I have a terrible day with my tail gate today , display has read "tailgate open" for the last few days , and only the top half opened. Today I put the key in the ignition and loaded the boot full of stuffclosed it , then tried to get in the drivers door and it had locked, stereo on , heater on , phone on charge , lights on , in Doncaster town centre, I was outside phones 4 u , and they let me find LR assist number and call them, then the shops all closed and I was stood for an hour listening to my phone ring, then all the electrics shut down and I heard the drivers rear door open, great I thought I can go home now , but no the battery was now flat, so LR assist turned up half an hour later, got me started , drove home . Now I can not open the boot at all. 08 HSE,5%TINTS, Factory tow bar, brum ,brum

Ive had the same problem on mine, also with the windows freezing shut on a very cold morning.

I have some silicone spray my caravan dealers gave me for the window rubbers and it worked a treat.
