The current FFRR was already well advanced through it's development stages by the time BMW purchased Rover Group and Land Rover. if I remember correctly, BMW delayed the launch of the FFRR slightly whilst they tried to improve build quality and reliability issues.

yep they had their xDrive for years but i think that they did not knew how such a high car would react and what to do to keep it stble and they did a good job. but the current FRR is a joke for the price... and the next one will probably be the same as LR is said to prepare a huge price increase for the next version |

The strory "I heard" back at the time was that BMW were prepared to invest ~GBP800 million in developing the X5 and particularly its 4x4 system, but then found they could buy Rover (inc LR) for the same amount, and get all of LR's world beating 4x4 knowledge off of the shelf. This really p ssed Honda off as they were wanting to increase their share holding in Rover at that time too! I also recently "heard" that the current X Drive (4x4) system in the X5 is a shared development with Mercedes Benz and thus it is in (or about to be in) the M Class, but the deal meant that BMW got to use it exclusively for a year or so first... All of this is rumour and speculation, and I am perfectly happy to be corrected by those talking to more informed horses mouths!! |
