TDV6 engine revved to red line on its own

Drove about 60 miles at speed on empty motorway on cruise control for a lot of the time, stopped at services for coffee. Restarted the car and the instant the engine fired it went straight to maximum revs all on its own! Switched the ignition off as fast as possible. Nervously tried another start and it was perfect, running at its normal quiet idle

Has anyone else had this? Only other possible factor was that the entire journey was done in below zero temperatures?
