The problem would arise if you were in an accident & the insurance assessor comes out to inspect your car & finds that there are non-standard or modified parts installed. Your insurance could be voided & you’d end up in some serious doo doo ! I’ve heard of a case locally where a guy crashed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a wall one night pretty much totalling it. The insurance inspector saw that there were aftermarket wheels fitted to the vehicle with a non standard tyre size & refused to pay out on the claim. Luckily for the Toyota owner, there were no other vehicles involved or persons injured, so he was only at the loss of his Land Cruiser. |

wow that has to be one of the most idiotic laws I've ever heard of, it makes no sense. To me it sounds like the corporate insurance companies wanted to suck more money out of people. When did this law become enacted?

That's just kinda the way it always has been, but in recent years it’s really been tightened up on. Basically the car has to be as the manufacturer built / designed it. The insurance companies will try anything to wiggle their way out of paying out on claims. Each & every loophole and/or quirk will be explored. In the case of the Land Cruiser guy, the way the insurance company would have looked on it is that it had non manufacturer approved wheels / tyres were fitted, so it was deemed as being non-road worthy & not the vehicle they insured. Or some such take on it. |
