Radio - tuning not great

Have been noticing that the standard factory fitted radio doesn't seem to want to lock into a radio station and stay hiss free - I know that this is common with local radio stations but I am talking about Radio 1/2/4 - I have a Rsen DVD system in the car and that hisses when you tune it in as well - anyone know if this is a common problem and how to fix it. Car is on an 05 plate.

cheers!

Stuart

I believe this happens because of the transmitting antennas and the frequencies are quite close it isn't the car radio.
I get R4 on FM Ok here but when I retune to Classic FM at home I get loads of hiss, drive 2miles west and I get a local radio station breaking over the top of Classic and travel 2 miles east and I get Classic breaking in over the local FM station. It's poor allocation of the frequencies on the FM bands (they are getting too crowded!). Maybe one of the radio ham/ audio specialists who are members will be able to explain it better 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi, try switching AF on the Radio from Auto to ON or vice versa. That fixed it for me.
- But I also had poor reception and the dealer fixed that for me too. 2022 P440e AB

Classic FM that's your issue... its all those old hissing recordings from 70yrs ago Rolling with laughter

Joking aside, do you have satellite radio in the UK ? Sirius or any other... I subscribed soon after I got the RRS as it was std on the car and I must say have very rarely ever turned on FM or AM stations again. Its perfect reception with no hiss and a great selection inc Radio 1 and World service here in the US.... only problem is it loses signal for a moment under underpasses and tunnels (of which we don't have many in TX, tunnels that is)... because it cant see the satellite..... now I can play all the 80's music I like and pretend I am back in the Uni Bar Censored as a .... Unfortunately neither Sirius or any of the other US satelitte radio stations have any plans to come to Europe. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

And today I was getting absolutely sh Censored tty FM reception on the car radio too even though I made the set retune for R4, it was all very crackly. I wonder if the BBC are doing work on the transmitters before the winter sets in. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

thanks to everyone that has responded. I have followed the advice and also conducted an experiment.

Using a Smart Car as a 'control' for the test I tuned the RR into BBC R4 on a static frequency, did the same in the Smart Car. RR was crackly and frankly rather awful and the Smart Car was perfect, my conclusion being the RR radio tuner/aerial is rubbish - this would also explain why TMC is absolute a waste of space - it would appear it can't tune into the messages and judging by this little experiment I can see why.

Any ideas as to what we can do?

cheers,

Stuart

Its no consolation to you but the radio in my RRS is ok. however I live in the South East where we are blessed with lots of transmitters.

I sometimes get an annoying faint clicking as the RDS hunts around two or three transmitters of the same strength.

The effect that Tim is describing is the "capture" effect where a strong nearby signal "pulls" your tuner to receive it causing breakthrough. This is a characteristic of FM reception not necessarily a feature of the radio set itself.

The RRS has diverse aerials in the rear windows, perhaps one is broken. Or perhaps you have some other equipment in the car (such as an aftermarket bluetooth etc.) that is transmitting a signal and desensitising your car radio. Perhaps the DVD installation people have played with the aerials to fit the DVD (perhaps splitting the signal between the two - halve each = half power each) - or taking one of the aerials and feeding one unit and feeding the other unit with the other signal defeating the purpose of the diverse aerials?

I have tried lots of things now and I am getting to the point that I am thinking I might need a radio expert to look at the system - I can't even get Radio 1 near Basingstoke without it sounding awful.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for a RRS Audio expert near North Hampshire?

cheers,

Stuart

Is the car out of warranty? If so, Klein's in Reading or Bannings in Guildford are the best I have used. L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!
