Falling below 26mpg in my TDv8 is a bad day! Usually getting between 26 and 28 driving locally on the country roads (I don't commute so the car does very little town driving). 3or 4 times a year I drive from Central Scotland to the south coast of England or London (just home last night from a week in the big smoke) on the motorway sat on the cruise (the TDv8 has adaptive cruise control so varies the speed to maintain a set distance between me and the car in front and most times accelerates the car quite gently with out doing gear changes for sprint take-offs) at 70 with the odd blat up to higher speeds to clear bunching traffic or idiots then I'm getting between 31-34mpg - my average yesterday was 31.4mpg on an average speed for the trip (from the trip comp) was 68mph. What knackered my averages was 2 long sections of motorway where I was not able to turn off the engine as the traffic was trickling along at 5-10mph through roadworks where there had also been accidents - there was also a section on the M74 where there was 8 miles of slow moving traffic where idiots kept slowing down to rubberneck an accident where a caravan had snaked and rolled across two lanes on the carriageway. Otherwise I would have had an average mpg of around 33 for the trip.

Ant please post some pics of the Stag when it arrives. It's one of my favourite cars of all time. I have been trying to persuade my brother to sell his collection of Healeys or chop in his A4 3.2Cabrio for a one 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Interceptor FF would also be alongside a Citroen SM and a Stag in my dream classic car garage! I was at The Beaulieu Motor Museum on Sunday and they have a red Interceptor there but it isn't an FF. Even after all these years it still looks a good car but the running costs would be horrendous. On the A-M website, in the used car listings there is an A-M Lagonda - the William Towns designed one, for sale and they still want £39k for it! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

If you choose your classic car wisely it can be quite cheap to run. Pre 1973 are tax exempt and there are some really good deals on classic insurance with limited mileage.

I had a Volvo 480ES for a couple of years and that had both average and instantaneous mpg readouts on the info dispay................... it was surprising how easy it was on the instantaneous readout to get 999.9mpg! It was quite an economical car to run - good mpg and a lifetime warranty, cheap Renault engine spares BUT it is the most unreliable car I have ever owned as it used to drown it's ECU with sickening regularity in wet weather if I ventured onto the motorway. In the 2 years I owned it the car never managed to get further south on the M6 than Hilton Park and on every occassion I ventured south in it, it would end the trip on the back of a flatbedv truck going to the Volvo dealership in Morecombe for draining out and drying. The cause of the problem was a grommet in the bulkhead that used to chafe through and let rainwater run into the passenger footwell via the glovebox which was also where the ECU was located. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

21/22 was consistant for my london based driving (i use sport quite alot). The absolute worst ive had it was consistantly 15.4 mpg for a few days. That was after i got it back from the dealer to make sure everything was running perfect. Which it was and still is .
