It could the reasonably well reported "transmission noise", which often results in the transfer case being replaced. If you search for "tranmission noise" - you can read all about it

Might be worth taking along a couple of threads from here just so the dealer is clear on what he needs to investigate?

Forget about a LR dealer in France having ANYONE in the technical dpt. speaking or even understanding English. |

If that's the case, I don't then understand why the sound is not ALWAYS there with the aircon on But you're actually right, it might sound like a faulty compressor. let see what my (very bright, very good and very expensive) dealer shall diagnose tomorrow |

When I purchased my 1st Land Rover (a Disco1 V8iES) the last thing the salesman told me as I was about to drive off the site was "Land Rovers are unlike any other car, they make noises you will never hear on any other car so unless it squeaks continuously or gets hot never mind about them" Seems to have worked very well in the last 16 years of owning Land Rovers. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
