Cigar Smoke

Bought a 12 month RRS in February and it stank of cigar smoke, from the previous owner.

Despite promises that the stench could be removed by the dealer, and having it air bombed (?) twice through the air conditioning unit at the dealer and them liberally scattering perfumed card type thingies under the mats and seats, the smell still lingers.

The dealer also recommended Supagard to guarantee the smell would go. I paid for it but it's made no difference.

Even leaving the car in the garage with the windows open simply does not do it.

Anyway, things came to a head last week when on holiday in Wales with the wife and kids. They all said that they felt sick from the smell and the wife has refused to travel in the car again.

So I may have to change the car unless I can finally get rid of the stink.

Can anyone help or advise at all please. I ordered the car on the basis that they could rid the car of these fumes and they haven't or can't. It drives well but the smell gets to us all.

My dad smokes cigars in his car, the front inside corner of the headlining and trim is brown compared the rest of the car which is still the ivory colour.

I don't think it can ever get got rid of, you can only mask the smell with pungant and unpleasantly false air fresheners.

Or, get the dealers to replace the headlining and A/B post trims, that's where the smell will be lingering most.

There's someting to be said for a non smoked in car. Mine's at 68,000 miles and I still get that new leather and trim smell.

Thanks for that.

Due to talk to the sales manager at Guy Salmon Knutsford next week about it.

As a family of non-smokers, I should have known better really.

Cigarette smoke is virtually impossible to remove from something like a car. Most of the materials in your car are porous and as such will absorb the smoke particles below the surface. With a jumper you can throw it in the wash, you can't do that with your car.... that's going to be a good argument with your dealer - I'd go softly at it because frankly, if you upset him in anyway he's going to just say you shouldn't have bought it which is fair comment really. Good luck, anyhow Confused

You're right but when the car was in the showroom, with all the windows open, it wasn't so obvious.

I took a test drive in a different car.

When I looked at the car that I bought, the smell wasn't so bad at the time but they assured me that the smell would be got rid of - and that paying for the Supagard would remove all trace!

Worst scenario - trade in time - Ouch!

My business is basically removing odours from buildings. I have succesfully deodorised and removed this kind of odour from several vehicles for friends and family. The process is thus....

1. Clean the affected areas as thoroughly as possible .

2. Remove all loose items.

3. Heat the car up as hot as possible, a few electric heaters in a sealed garage for 2 days should get it up over 50c...Once I used a car spray oven to do ths but they charged me £200 in 1995

4. Thermally fog the car interior for 2 minutes... any disaster recovery company will do this for about £50

5. leave an ozone generator in the car for 24 hours... any good disaster recovery company will hire one of these for about £70

6. Allow the car to cool down.

7. clean the interior again.

This method works every time , and I have never had a failure, it is an aggressive method.

My guess is that the costs payable by the dealer would be around the £7-1000 mark to a restoration company to carry out this work.

The science behind this is that the heat is opening the pores of the materials being deodorized which subsequently close leaving a clean smelling car, supagard, deodorizers etc simply mask the odours, and during the recent hot weather the car will have expanded in the heat making the problem seem worse. 08 HSE,5%TINTS, Factory tow bar, brum ,brum

on a similar thread to fabreeze

Can't you get the plug in wall units, that smell of vanilla and roses, that also take out Cig smoke smells.

Just run an extension lead into the car and leave it a while Question

What you need is something that will remove the source of the smell, not just cover it... which is why Sheffield Jase's solution, although long winded and complex is probably nearer the truth.

Yes, masking the odour will only delay the problem.
Also women have a much more efficient olfactory sstem than men , in other words they can smell better than men, so what men see as ok women may still find offensive. 08 HSE,5%TINTS, Factory tow bar, brum ,brum
