If it's in warranty, you stand a better chance... but I don't believe they are bound to do it for free as if it was a safety recall. I'm surprised from what Umberto was saying that if it's considered a safety risk due to unexpected discharge of the airbag, you'd think they'd take the same approach here.

This is what showed on Consumer Reports (a US publication) last month regarding this upcoming recall:

http://rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25323

At least as far as the US is concerned, a recall is a pretty big deal. Letters go out to owners, Federal authorities are notified, and of course all VINs affected are serviced free of charge, whether or not they are still under factory warranty. I suspect the same would have to be true abroad, even if they don't call it a recall there, considering the malfunction could indeed become a safety risk - and a major potential liability for Land Rover - if one ignores the SRS fault light and then gets into a crash.

PS: Why can't I get my signature to align properly in my message? Very Happy

We certainly have recalls here too... depending on the severity you can sometimes get fullpage ads taken in out in the daily papers to bring it to owners' attention.

TB, do you know much about this or is it not your domain? Confused

James, from the dealership end? Thoughts?

To be honest I didn't know anything until I read this thread.

I wouldn't say this is a crytical fault, but remember I'm not the expert. The Service Bulletin explains that the fault will identify itself by the SRS light illuminating on the drivers binnacle. It does not mention anything about the airbag going off as your driving along. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Yeah, it looks fine now. When I posted earlier though, the sig would just append at the end of the message, no space bar. Perhaps The Boss is messing around with some forum settings. Very Happy

TB, I don't think the hazard is that the airbag may pop for no reason. My understanding - when reading the bulletin - is that it may not deploy at all if these wires fracture inside the steering wheel due to friction with the rotary coupler thingy, and you happen to have an accident. Even though the SRS light would supposedly turn on to warn of the malfunction, such a possibility would certainly be enough to trigger a safety related recall around here. We'll see what happens in the next few days.

I'll have a chat to Paul King our Service Manager on Monday as I'm not aware of this issue so far. To answer the question above, generally speaking there are three actions that the manufacturers may carry out.

Recall is the serious one where owners are contacted via the DVLA database to ensure that everyone is written to. Usually any modifications will be carried out regardless of warranty, however it depends from case to case and the seriousness.

Service Actions are where LR have had a small number of issues highlighted that may be related to a particular chassis range or a component fitted to specific models. They will then possibly write using their database or rely on dealers carrying out that work at the next service if the car is in warranty. Each time a vehicle comes in dealers will check for any outstanding service actions.

Reassurance program is where either a collection of minor items need attention or one major item which will enhance the customers overall ownership experience if rectified. This is a large-scale operation which may involve dealers proactively writing to their database, putting on extra loan vehicles or possibly even taking on more staff. We are currently opperating a reassurance program for FFRR at the moment.

The above is not a detailed analysis, and it does vary from case to case, and also depends on the seriousness of the issue. I would imagine that the classification could vary from market to market as one country may deem a particular issue more seriously than another.... just a guess!

Hope this answers the question?

James
