Loss of power and cruise control.

Hi All
Not sure if any one has come across this one before but im at my wits end with it, mainly on safety grounds.

I keep getting `special programs off` on the dash then this reduces my power to almost zero. Also and i dont know if its conected to this problem. I lose the ability to engage the cruise control or the crusie control turn itself off for no reason.

Once special programs are lost or the cruise contol fails to engage, all i have to do is turn off the engine and restart to clear the fault. There is no regularity with this it can happen 6 times in an hour or once in a week. All i know is its more so when im towing, but not ultimate to towing.

I have had it into main dealers and they have replaced both EGR valves and dont an ECU upgrade. They are now telling me that this is a much as they can do.

Im not happy with this, as it happens when im towing down the motorway, suddenly going into a very slow limp home mode. One of these days its going to get shafted from behind or into a situation where im not going to be able to just go for the hard shoulder.

Look forward to any help or advise where i should turn now

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum Mim, which engine do you have and what model year is your RRS?

Gut feeling is that the turbo vanes are sticking which causes loss of power, since they've changed EGRs already. "Special Programs Off" is unrelated - the TR programs are shut down if the ECU senses that anything is wrong and you get this message. The cruise control issue is probably the 'rotary coupler' in the steering wheel. Does the SRS light come on when your cruise fails?

Both of these are known issues, pity you're not in warranty. Also, change your dealer, they should have sorted this straight away - sign up on disco3.co.uk, search for a member called "10forcash" (http://disco3.co.uk/forum/member179.html), he's a site sponsor on disco3.co.uk and a travelling mechanic who's more familiar with these cars than most dealer service managers. Use the e-mail button to contact him.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Can also recommend 10forcash. Thumbs Up

Just a shot from the left field..... have you checked your brake bulbs? A lose /broken filament can sometimes cause wierd and wonderful errors with cruise and with special progs. Another favourite is a duff wheel speed sensor.

10forcash has got all the diagnostic kit to read your error messages and fault codes, he travels to you and he's fairly local (Derby) so should be able to fit you in pretty promptly. Two lives - lived one

This season, oi be mostly toasting my left leg in the 90 while the missus drives the D3

Hi Mim

Welcome !
Firstly the special programmes off thing seems to be a quirk of the sport - it happens on mine for no apparant reason, not noticed it doing it anymore when i'm towing but i do seem to get it quite often - like you a quick turn off of the ignition and it seems to clear the fault.
Had the same situation with the cruise control - not funny when it disengages while your doing 80 down the motorway and no warning lights before it happens or as it happens, mentioned it to my dealer and they plugged it into the diagnostics and updated some various things, touchwood its never happened since.
I would certainly check your brake lights - i had a bulb out and no warning on the dash that a bulb had gone but i kept getting a message when i started up telling me i had a transmission error - since i noticed the bulb had gone and replaced it i've never had the error message come up again !
Out of interest which dealer is your vehicle with ? I'm from stoke and some dealers are certainly better than others Wink 2005 TDV6 HSE Zermatt Silver Ebony Interior Sunroof, RSE, Side Steps

Thanks for all the suggestions and info on this matter, but it has been diagnosed as the turbo. Looks like a bit nearing about the 2k mark. Shame it has to be replaced since the motor has not got 50k on the clock. I have been told this is a common fault on the earlier models.
