Towing with the "get you home spare"

Before setting of on my hols I thought I would check the tyre pressure on the spare and hey ho its labled up as a 50mph/80kph. My Sport has 20" and the spare is 19" the tyre is not a low speed item and the size indicates that the rolling radius will bring it up to the same as the 20". So is the issue with the wheel? ie is it a reinforced plastic?
Can anyone tell me if this is ok to tow with in an emergency at or below the stated speed, I have checked the hand book with no success? D4 3.0 HSE with all the toys.
Departed RRS TDV8 HSE C/W with Full Arden body kit.
I never drive faster than I can see!

I presume its a full sized spare? not one of those thin wheels

I don't have a RRS, but when i got a puncture in Scotland i spoke to LR Assist. and they said it was ok to tow at the speed indicated on the wheel 50mph on my Freelander 2.

Apparently I have since been told that the lower speed is due to the bolts been designed for alloy wheels not steel, but i don't know if this is fact.

I have just had to put my spare on as some nice person thought it would be fun to make a hole in my tyre wall. I also have 20" tyres but the spare is a 19" which says limited to 50 mph. Driving at that speed on a busy M4 is not something I would recommend so kept my speed the same as HGV's at around 55 mph.

Like you CJ I can't see the reason behind it unless its not a proper wheel.

On a good note have got replacement Continental 20" tyres for £210 each fitted so replacing both front tyres tomorrow as they are about ready for a change.

The spare is indeed a 19" full size but not a steel wheel, it is black but looks very much like a reinforced plastic. D4 3.0 HSE with all the toys.

It's an OEM wheel, so whatever it's made from as long as you stick within the posted limits it should be perfectly fit for getting you home, I would've said. Just keep your speed down, especially if there is extra load Very Happy

OEM black alloy yes, proper tyre yes, same rolling radius as 20" so why the restriction? No mention of it in the hand book, have contacted the local dealer and they couldnt give me the answer!!
My concern is towing a large heavy outfit and heaven forbid you are involved in an accident!
I think the best option is to buy a new 20" wheel and tyre. D4 3.0 HSE with all the toys.

It is a black, 19" alloy the same as fitted to some HSE D3s, if you look at the load rating on the wheel it is higher than the 20" 10 spoke alloys on the RRS. The rolling radius is slightly greater than the 20" maybe that is why the lower speed rating? Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
