Stolen Catalytic Converters

Something to be aware of.
My brother is a copper in Kent and told me tonight that they have seen a speight of thefts of Catalytic Converters which are being cut off using an electric pipe saw and being sold over seas for their metallic content - platinum, palladium and rhodium. The Range Rover has been a particular target vehicle in Kent.

Of course, with the rear seats folded down you can fit plenty of them in the back of a D3... along with the copper piping you've just nicked off the building site down the road Laughing

Quite a few years back when i used to be a bailiff, we got a job to move some pikeys off a piece of land they had set up on (simular to whats in the news near that MP house)

Turned up with the Council, Police, Police Armed Responce, lots of tow trucks and dragged them and there caravans from the field to a laybay on the A1.

on a unowned Question pitch there was 27 ford transit bumpers a part dismantled transit vans, a steel container with a unregistered brand new transit van in it and 4 tonnes of copper wire that looked to have been stripped from something.

best comment of the day was "I've never worked a day in my life like you Censored Censored Censored and i still bought my home (a caravan) cars' (a shogun) for cash" Shocked

Yep... there's a place not far from where we used to live which is an "official" pikey camp, well I say pikeys, they actually operate mobile fairgrounds. Some time ago, there was a big car smash on the road running past it and the police were directing us into the camp and back out of the other exit to get round the closure. Driving through there was a sight for sore eyes.... brand new FFRRs everywhere, some very expensive looking static caravans and no doubt not a bank account in sight Wink

There's a lot to be said for not existing.

Does anyone know the reason/meaning of the word Pikey and where it comes from?

My research suggested that "pikey" meaning 'itinerant' comes from "pike-man" - the pike-bearing foot-soldiers. they did not carry the long staves most of the time as they simply fitted their head to a staff when employed as soldiers. in between engagements, the pike-men were itinerant, looking for work, whether as mercenaries, labourers, 'muscle' or otherwise. these grizzled footsoldiers would often make a nuisance of themselves and so itinerants with a pre-disposition to petty crime were called 'pikeys'. there is a misconception that it relates to gypsies, but my research which has a sound historical background, suggests otherwise.

Oh dear what I have started Confused I do love a good old rant about gypo's though...unfortunately being involved in the fabrication of structural steel we invariable deal with the F Censored KERS on a too regular basis. Sold a P reg 3 series BMW to a Gypo for 2K cash a few years back, next day a trailer load of fabricated steelwork ready for delivery was taken out of my yard worth 15K to us and about 2.5K scrap to who ever robbed it.

In the end I was 13K out of pocket and I assume the gypo that robbed the trailer was the same one I sold the car to so he was a 3 series and 500 quid up after scrapping the steel.....HOWS THAT FAIR???!!!! Big Cry

I use to regularly service eviction papers on gypsies and the traveller community

though the gypsies use the swear and shout a bit at you more often than not they would move on of their own free will to another disused factory car park or roundabout. After trying to sell you a brace of rabbits at each caravan

Where as the long hair travellers who haven't washed in 5 years and smoke/inject anything to get high, would give you a gob full of foul abuse and how they should have their right to live where they want (other peoples land) and once even had a dance around me in her naked size 30 splendor with dyed hair (all over Shocked )
