What are Shell putting in their fuel?

This afternoon I put 78litres of Shell regular diesel into my Tdv8 and went for a swift jaunt up the A9 from Stirling to Laggan (near to Aviemore) and back - a total of 220 miles. Speeds were kept to the national limits on the A road sections but I let the car have it's rein on the dual carriageway section and had some fun when traffic/conditions allowed.... Embarassed Embarassed I accelerated gently rather then doing kickdown pullaways and at the end of the trip the average mpg on the computer is showing 34.9mpg............................... Now could the consistently low temperatures (between +4C and -1C) have had something to do with it or have I had an extremely good tankful of diesel out of Shell! BTW I never exceeded 34mpg in the TDv6 in the 30 months of ownership, I got very close but never bettered it, on that front the TDv8 is proving no thirstier than the TDv6 as I am getting almost the same fuel consumption with both engines in the same driving conditions Very Happy Very Happy
The wind wasn't any influence as it was pushing me north on the way and hindering me on the way back. Going north is all uphill, and coming south is on a trailing throttle for a lot of the way, but with the wind against me I don't think there was that light a load on the engine.

Also I have noticed that as soon as the outside temperature drops below 1C the compound in the wipers goes rock hard and they make the most awful grating noise on the front and rear screens which is a pain when it is snowing. Anybody have any cures (apart from taking the car to somewhere warmer!) 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thing with the mileage though is that I wasn't hanging around and that is the same consumption as I got on the first tankful. I wonder if the ECU has done one of it's little self tweaks like I've had on the previous cars, now have 5500 miles on her. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Not sure what the car is getting just now as M. has it away with her, will find out when she gets back. By the time she gets back here there will be around 15,000km on her.
Mine took a big hit when I put the MT/Rs on, I did notice that when I change wheels it takes a good distance before the TMS catches up with the change in wheels.
BTW. did you get your Ferrari when you got your shell??? Thumbs Up Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

Oh dear - I think my TDV8 might be due a trip to the stealer!!! I get 24 mpg and that's not booting it all the time. The average speed though is about 36 mph so not long distance high speed. Does anyone have any other figures that might make me feel a bit better???

Would my "normal" average of 26-28mpg be any consolation Jonathon? I don't do any commuting driving, mostly fast A roads and back roads or long haul Scotland to Southampton runs. This figure today really is highly abnormal for my car! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

OI VA, I might be one of the "senior" members of this forum, but with this car I don't hang around any more, it's just so much fun to drive it VERY fast.

19.1mpg.............................. you need to get out of town more. Also that bedstead you have on the roof and the MTR's cannot be helping when you are able to get above 25mph! Just thank your lucky stars you aren't running a real G4................................... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My Trip computer is showing 33.6 today , I've used Shell v power for about 5k miles now .

My journeys are a mix of town hooliganism (sorry officer Whistle ) and M6 / A14 test pilotting.
Gentle I am not.

If I drive like I've nicked it I can get it go down but generally sticks 32-34.

I don't know what they put in it but it must be full of vitamins!

Keep truckin.

Slovenia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

After reading your posts I think there is something really wrong with my TDV8 which has 5000km (3200 miles) because my average consumption is(more than half is driven on the highway not fast and local back roads with no real traffic and the rest in the city) and my av.con. is 12,7-13liters per 100km which is MPG approx 22!!! Big Cry
Even this weekend when I did approx 350km (220miles) mostly highway driving speed approx.70 miles per hour my avg.cons.was only 25,7MPG!!!
I think I must be doing something wrong Whistle Whistle 2008 RRS TDV8 HSE, Java black, Alpaca,.....

What's the quality of your fuel like in your neck of the woods, Markos? As Tim says 34mpg is VERY unusual... that's about what I used to get out of the 535d, which weighs considerably less and is much more aerodynamic of course, simply by virtue of the fact it's not SUV-shaped Wink

One thing that will not help with fuel economy is if you drive with the gearbox in the Sport mode all the time, it might give you a lot better acceleration but it also locks out 6th gear which means that the car will not go into it's highest gear on a cruise. Also if you run on tyres that are larger than those recommended by LR then your odometer will be giving an incorrect reading which will also effect the readout of the trip computer and the apparrent gearing of the car as well. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
