Rear discs and pads advice

Ehup all,

I have been delaying starting this job although I have replaced brakes and discs on every single one of my previous cars.

I have read loads of really useful information on here and downloaded Bodsys bible.

However I am still questioning whether this is doable for me as a home spanner Confused

My single biggest concern is the epb - the more I read the more I question Shocked

Firstly I have no code reader - is it essential or at least a lot easier if I had icarsoft or even autel ap200 . My understanding is it’s relatively straightforward to hook up via the OBD and simply put the epb into service mode - is that job done is it that self explanatory . I’ll invest in one if it’s a good long term prospect.

I understand that you can go through a manual process using epb button and accelerator and start button to achieve same but requires some practice to get correct Exclamation

What’s the alternative- can I leave the epb off and simply pull fuse 38, will that allow the shoes enough slack after adjusting the self adjustable wheel manually to remove the disc

What’s the jacking up process have both rear wheels to be off the ground

The mechanics side I am comfortable with - no real questions on getting the calipers of , disc of, replacing pads etc

Re the handbrake shoe adjustment wheel, is this backed of all the way off prior to trying to remove the disc ( been there before with BMW rear discs with the lip on the rear snagging removal). I’m not intending to replace the shoes unless they are needed, so on reassembly disc on then adjust wheel till wheel locks then back of 8 teeth of the wheel- how critical is this bit. It’s nigh on impossible to adjust one tooth at a time with the BMW so how easy on the RRS

Assuming I get it back together what’s most concerning to me is the setting / re engaging of the epb. Once completed I understand you need to drive the vehicle slowly and engage the epb until the vehicle stops , repeat this three times, which adjust the shoes and take up of the epb. It just seems counter intuitive to a degree, I have done similar when fitting new shoes on the BMW but with a manual handbrake so you can feel the resistance and adjust. Worries the hell out of me having zero control. Big Cry

What does everyone else do - am I over thinking this job Shocked

Last thing I want to do is balls up a perfectly working epb, I will reluctantly put it to an Indy once I save up enough if stick comes to lift

As always all advice is welcome- will be looking at doing this before end of October

Cheers all

Hi,

over thinking Whistle yes you are Laughing

you've read the Bodsy Bible you just need to work through it.

if you are going to replace the discs and pads you really should replace the ebb shoes as the work inside the rear discs and your replacing them so new shoes, yes back off before removing and yes you can count clicks one by one, yes apply the ebb/parking/emergency brake while moving to bed the new shoes and discs in, don't forget this is the procedure for emergency braking while your driving if you lift the switch at 60mph it gives the signal to brakes like an emergency stop its not the same as applying a mechanical handbrake Shocked

I did all mine on the D3 (currently for sale Whistle ) and found the springs on the shoes had been put on wrong Rolling Eyes now all correctly fitted, check advanced for options and prices

its all very doable the service mode is straight forward to engage (although I don't remember doing it on mine just left the ebb off) and did 1 wheel up in the air at a time, if you want both up use 2 axle stands not 1
you don't need a code reader although I would go for a IID .

Don't forget if you do fit new epb shoes, to bed them in correctly you do need to put it into the "bedding in mode" first, and follow the procedure, not just tear up the road and whack the park brake on. Laughing

Cheers

Maybe my reply was a bit short in detail Laughing

Yes follow the bible regarding bedding in the new shoes it’s all done at a low speed 👍

Applying at higher speeds does Not apply the shoes but operates the callipers as if you did an emergency stop.

Eh up all

Firstly thanks for the notes a few questions

Riverblanche - soyou just put the car into park and the epb did not automatically engage therefore no need for reader or manual sequence. I’m guessing then you just let the handbrake adjuster off to maximum slack ?

Get the difference now in the epb and how it works on bedding in Thumbs Up ( not like my mk1 escort back in the day when I plummed in a home made hydraulic handbrake Mr. Green )

Col - I’m glad I asked here because I would have probably gone 10-15 and whacked it on Whistle I’m not contemplating fitting new epb shoes but will evaluate the condition of spring and adjusters and if they need doing will fit em

Pistnbroke- just to clarify you just put it on ramps in P but did not engage handbrake, then fitted ?

I’m just checking the art of the possible here in terms of what ever Has done that had worked

I’m even unsure if my 2012 plate will allow into P and not automatically apply the epb - need to check that

In planning on jacking up both rears onto 3.5t jacks to give me maximum access - I’m edging closer to doing this rather than not.

Actually got a couple of prices on the job from Indy’s ranges from £325 - £350 all in - reckon I can get all decent parts for £125 I ain’t really got £200 to give away as such so more tempted to give it a shot

Keep the pointers coming please

Cheers all

''I’m even unsure if my 2012 plate will allow into P and not automatically apply the epb - need to check that''

If it does, you can disable that feature in the CCF files.

Car Configuration Files, but you do need a diag. tool to access them. Save up your pennies and buy a GapII tool, not cheap but worth their weight in gold and soon pay for itself instead of paying dealer £100.00 plus just to help diagnose a problem. Quite often come up in the for sale section. Expensive to buy but always a good second hand market to recoup some of the cost if you sell the car.

Cheers

Mine is a 2009 so you have to put the handbrake on by hand...Think I put it in service mode and just jacked it up and did the job ...Ramps ??

Col will tell us about service mode I forgot how to do it . Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Eh up all

Pistnbroke- thanks I think the 2012 are slightly different so want to be sure.

Col - cheers no reader as yet maybe inthe near future ( could be sooner if this rear disc job goes 8i8s up Rolling Eyes )

NoExpert - I was hoping you were doing yours given it’s facelift like mine I think 🤔. Let me know how you get on and any tips . If you using a reader won’t help me a lot though sadly as it’s initial setup that’s the concern although. I think you also run Brembos all round Thumbs Up

I’m also wanting to check as never tried it that:-

If I simply stop the car in N then turn it off will it allow this or simply refuse until I put into P
If I stop and put in P - can you still rotate the rear wheels ( I’m assuming you can as the lock will only engage the gearbox not lock the drive system )
The above assumes I can put in P and stop the engine and the car does not automatically apply the handbrake- never checked this so need to try unless someone knows

I’m going to try the job, ( I think ......) will be ordering parts tomorrow or Friday

Thanks all for inputs on this you can read all you want but nowt like sage advice from those that have actually done the jobs Thumbs Up

You do not need a diag. tool to do either the rear disc and pads or the epb shoes if I remember right, to put it into service mode etc. you use a combination of pressing the brake pedal and pulling/pushing the park brake switch up or down, the same applies when you want to put it into the "bedding in mode for the epb. Everything you need to know is in "Bodsys Brake Bible" just follow his instructions and you should not have a problem.

Put the transmission in neutral and turn the ignition off with the car left in "N", try pushing the car you will soon find out if it has applied the park brake. Laughing

Cheers

Hi,

now its been mentioned Laughing I think I may have left in N and turned off but yes back the shoes adjuster off through the discs window and it helps the disc come off.

Hardest bit I remember was putting the shoes back on with the springs on (after I worked out they were on wrong when I took them off Shocked

I just did a 2012 Disco 4 rear park brake shoes and rotors. It allowed me to shut off in neutral and if I pressed the EPB switch down while shutting off the park brake didn’t engage. BUT, then it went into park on me at some point between shutting off and opening the hood. Ended up just pulling the emergency neutral lever under the cup holders since I didn’t want to deal with it.

The job itself isn’t that bad. You need to do certain things in a certain order which is minor. You’ll also have the bias springs which are no big deal, but don’t mix or lose them. Take a pic before you start pulling things apart, just in case. Be VERY careful when doing the wedge adjuster, the screw heads are like butter. Make sure the hex key wrench you use fits tight. 5 nm of torque on it will likely be past the half turn you backed it off. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
