Handbrake use?

Do you actually use the handbrake. I just leave it in park. Would not using the handbrake have a detremental effect on it?

You should use the handbrake especially on a hill. Not so much on flat as this is all that is stopping your car from rolling away if in Park. This is a Ford but all basically the same.

I'm in the "use it or loose it" camp.
If its properly adjusted I can't see why you wouldn't, if it's left unused I'd have thought there would be more chance of it seizing up.
Not to mention that it's a legal requirement to set the parking brake when your vehicle is unattended on a road (quitting).

Use it all the time. Just serviced and adjusted the shoes a few weeks ago. The lever on the right rear was seized so had to address that. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.

The park brake on my 2010 TDV8 activates automatically when engine is turned off even if fthe transmission is in neutral.

I always engage the park brake prior to putting the transmission into park to prevent the transmission being loaded up (especially on an incline).

I am still on the original brake after 11 years.

Quitting, that's one I've not heard of in a good while. It's actually the offence of leaving the engine running in an unattended vehicle as it happens. Nowt to do with handbrakes! Wink 2015 RRS HSE Dynamic 3.0 SDV6

Have a look at the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, s107-(1).
An offence to leave a vehicle on a road unattended unless the engine stopped AND the parking brake is set.
Most people know they shouldn't leave the engine on, virtually nobody knows they should set the parking brake.

Few years ago an LR specialist told me to always engage the parking brake and also lower the air suspension when parking up.

He said the people who experience air compressor and parking brake problems further down the line is because they’re never used.

Don’t know how true this really is, but I always do it. Besides, using both makes it more secure and easier getting in and out Very Happy

I use my EPB every time. If the vehicle is serviced correctly, it should be cleaned and adjusted as part of the service and so should be trouble free.

I know I'm going to regret that last bit now... Big Cry 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
