What was that about reliable BMWs?

Driving home from work on Fri night and the rear quarters of my car goes BANG! Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Any little bump in the road resulting in more banging. Limp home and call out BMW Emergency Service and the guy has a prod about and pronounces that the NSR shock has come adrift of it's mounting at the top end and and any movement in the axle is driving the shock up into the bodywork on the inside. Nice! Bloke wouldn't let me drive it up to dealers (which is 10 min drive away) and so low-loadered it up there for me.

So.... rental BMW promised only to find that BMW rental dept is closed after hours and at weekends so I get pushed at Enterprise who attempt to offer me a diesel Mondeo. No thanks, I say... after a bit of coming and going I end up with "the best they can offer me", which turns out to be an 07 plate Nissan X-trail. It's manual, which is hard work in stop-start traffic on the M25, but the spec is surprisingly good. Leather, satnav, electric/heated seats, panoramic sunroof... funny how one of these 4x4s handles on the road so badly though, being used to the RRS ride Whistle Mind you, much better than a Mondeo I don't doubt, even if the new one does look quite smart.

Spoke to dealer this morning re progress and they've confirmed that the shock needs replacing, but that also the NSR alloy is slightly buckled. I rejected his kind offer to replace the wheel & tyre for £600 (as it wouldn't be replaced under warranty like the shock).... the MSport 18s are 10 a penny so will source one off eBay instead.

This is the first time that any of my BMWs have broken really... now I know what it feels like for some of you folks with your flaky LRs Laughing

Is the Alloy damage not attributed to the failure then - they won't do the wheel under goodwill ?!?!?!?!

Confused

I asked that and apparently they don't think so. Whether that's BS or not, I don't know... but I have a stinking cold at the moment, so I'm not in the best state to enter into an argument about it with them.

don't think so - translates - try and fob this off. Get them to check the other three wheels for buckles and if this is the only one excuses over...

I am no car tech but I can figure that losing the anti bumpy bit may have consequences for the going round and round bit... Laughing

I'd get them to think some more - it'll make you feel better otherwise you have an expensive cold...

I had a buckle on the RRS and dealer changed no questions asked...

Fair point, MAW... I'll have a word with them and see what sticks. I'm not sure whether the symptoms of a broken shock would buckle a wheel or not, especially for the small distance it was driven after it happened. Again, I drive these things - don't know how they work especially well... Very Happy

Very Happy worth a try if it saves it coming out of your pocket - you could also 'claim' some damage must have been occuring in run up to total failure ... ?

Except that if you complain surely they will say that the "blow" that damaged the wheel also took out the shock absorber, so the whole thing is chargeable rather than warranty. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

Well, wonders never cease.... the service tech that was dealing with my car yesterday is off today and the new tech for today thinks the wheel WAS damaged by the shock and is happy to replace it under warranty! Shocked I wish people who have to provide a service to the public would all read the same instruction manual... Rolling Eyes
