Servicing opinions...

Hi All,

Just after some opinions on what direction I take with my RRS going forward in regards to servicing.

Some background, it's a 65 plate SDV6 and had a 5 year service pack, so everything so far has been done at the main dealer.
It's now due its next service and I'm trying to decide what direction to take it in...

It has a basic core WD warranty on it, which will expire just before next years service. I don't plan on renewing the warranty and just taking the risk on the crank or anything else.

Right, here's what I'm thinking of doing:

I'm handy with a spanner and enjoy doing my own servicing - warranty companies do not, so I'd be looking to get a basic oil and oil filter change done at a local indy to satisfy this.
The other items (air/pollen/fuel filters) I will buy and fit myself.

After this, with an expired warranty, I will do all servicing myself (apart from the timing belt next year). I don't tend to do this on cars newer than 5 years, but haven't had any issues with selling cars in the past when showing all receipts and so on.

I've had the car for 3 years - initially I only planned on keeping it for 2, but I love it so much I can't see myself parting with it for a few years - after all, I'd only replace it with a newer version of the same car...I suspect I'll keep it for at least another 3 years.

So all of the options:

1. Full Main Dealer service (£575)
2. Full Indy service (£?)
3. Main Dealer oil service (£220) plus filters to fit myself (£85)
4. Indy oil service (£?) plus filters to fit myself (£85)
5. Self service all (from next year only - £140)

I'll probably start doing some preventative maintenance on gearboxes/diffs etc, too...

Ha, wow, that's all a bit waffly - sorry about that! I guess it shows how unsure I am, so please, opinions all! Very Happy MY16 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic

I have always done 90% of my own servicing, on both cars and trucks, keeping a record of the date and mileage of any sevicing/repairs, with receipts to show items used.

I have never had an issue with anyone who came to buy, in fact most are impressed of such a record, and, like me don't trust dealers to do what they should, or say they do/did.

Certain things I have an indie do on both my LR vehicles, but only because I'm too old to get underneath and back out again!

Im in the same cam would prefer to do the work myself so I know its been done properly, but if there is an issue then it can be hard work proving you are competent so to speak.

If you are not going for a warranty then I personally would say make sure you put the save cash aside in case the engine blows!

I think id be doing the same warranty or not, get an indy or dealer basic oil change for the history and receipts and then things like air filters and stuff Id do myself, any buyer will see the receipts and luv it. I think just looking on a an LR service record is only worth it like you say up ot maybe 5yrs after that its not value for money as they clearly dont support you with good will should their be a problem, so why pay out to a dealer who often dont do the work that well or try and go for the upsell all the time for things that will last for another 3 years but have a spec of rust on them so they say its corroded and want to replace it!

I'd go the route of maybe an oil change at a dealer (the price for the oil isnt much different to the Indies around here as they do a deal for 3 + cars) If you do this then technially is still has a FLRSH and will show on the OSH site too
Or Oil at Indy for the records or a competent person for warranty
Any actual work required for repairs etc... indy unless its something you can do at home.

I think Indies take more care as they have to keep customers where dealers get them fed to them in the first 3 yrs for waranty and some of the fitters are just out of quickfit but its luck! If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

Yep agreed, even thigns like wiper blades, tyres, tracking, batteries, I keep it all and bundle it in there. If ive bought a new filter and fitted myself in between (mainly pollen) I keep the receipt, any extras Ive bought they all go in the file, often buyers are amazed at it all and it shows its been looked after! Mate of mine think Im mad! but ive never had an issue selling a car and usually there isnt much haggling as they can see its good an well cared for If a jobs worth doing, get a someone who knows what they are doing to do it!

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

Back when I'd not long been shaving. I used to do servicing etc., on my car myself (with Dad's help). These days, I have a beard with more than enough grey in it and I use indies for work on my cars. A VAG specialist for the Skoda, an LR specialist for the RRS.

My RRS is my daily driver and I'll be out in it for several hours a day so I can't afford to have it sat on the drive while I try to get a part or figure out how to release something or refit it. And I like my knuckle to have skin on them! Laughing

My LR indie provides loan cars (Disco Sports these days, FL2 previously) so it's just purely down to convenience. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

It’s a great question, especially from some who is not afraid to get their hands dirty. I think it’s important to use a good indie or a main dealer. I mean, if we’re just changing oil then hire an oil chimp. But servicing these is so much more than that (or it should be). If keeping for a few more years it may not make a huge difference to value, but it will make some difference in value, and whether or not that difference in value is returned in servicing and maintained saves is another matter.

I’m old skool. Spend it while you got it. Use your own time for something else! L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone!

I've gone for an indy oil change to satisfy the warranty (saves £90 over MD) and will complete the rest of the service myself - provides a nice relief from work and I enjoy doing it. MY16 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic

For me stamps and the JLR service portal thing are a bit vague at best. I'd rather a book full of receipts with mileage logged anytime, it shows exactly what's paid for.. L494 3.0L SDV6 Autobiography in Chile Red (Current)
