Help with whine from PS/ Transmission??

Hi, my 2007 RRS, now has a continual whine. So when driving down the motorway for example, the whine is consistent, when in a straight line. As soon as I put some 'pressure' onto a left hand turn, the whine disappears totally. As soon as I return to straight ahead, its back . . . so when turning left, all silent...... ideas welcome, I reckon it must be steering related?

I'd start with wheel bearings. When I had wandering problems with my RRS, my local indie mechanic took it for a quick test drive and diagnosed one of the problems as wheel bearing by doing just what you describe. Gentle turning of the steering wheel generated a noise when turning one way. It was admittedly more of a growling noise than a whine but worth a look to start with especially as its a common failure. Robin
