Hi all, on my 20'' rims I have run Pirelli PZero 275/40/20 but am now on Grabber AT3 275/45/20 which I fitted as I wanted off road grip. However, I have never found the Grabbers very sure footed on wet roads.
Most of my driving is on fast-ish sweeping B roads so can anyone recommend a 45 profile tyre which is great on these sorts of wet roads? Although an offroad capability would be ideal, it's not essential.

The problem with AT tyres is that the tread blocks tend to be a little firmer than road tyres,
this is to deal with the harsher surfaces, these then don't flex on the wet road surfaces and this
results in less grip and more uncertainty in the high speed corners..
I am sure there is a compromise your happy with out there somewhere..

I've been running Avon ZX7's, good price and A rated in wet. Work fine for me as I am seldom off road and they are reasonably quiet as well.

The Avon isn't an AT tyre though.

I found the AT3 to be sure footed in the wet until worn. Once down to 5mm, they started to get a bit slippery on wet tarmac.

As mentioned already, ATs are a compromise and so won't be as good on tarmac as a pure road tyre. It's just something you have to take account of when driving.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I know but as I read his post he wasn't directly asking for an AT type recommendation, said it would be ideal but would consider something non AT suitable for a fast B road.

With 99% of the time being on road, I reckon the 'wet road capability' outweighs having an AT. I got out of several muddy scrapes with the Pirelli PZero so I guess the Avon will do me - I hope!

It's coming up tyre time for me aswell so Father Jack, have you been through a winter with those Avons yet? If so how did they do, any snow or ice etc.?

I've read reviews comparing the Avons with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (what I was considering trying) and the Avons certainly look good value, beating a much more expensive tyre on most things except wear (which the price difference can soak up),but no reference to winter driving which I'm aware it is a summer tyre. 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

I haven't had any snow of any real significance since fitting though down to minus 5c has been coldest. They were fine.

Would have to say that my AT3s are absolutely fine and sure-footed in the rain and I have full confidence in them. I drive a lot of B & unclassified, tend not to hang about and I've never worried about them even in torrential rain. Perhaps the only difference is am on 255/55/19s and the extra sidewall provides a bit more flex and thus grip.
