Ok, i want to know which form of transmission your prefer using, both on road and off road.

Opinions and reasons please

I use an automatic with my RRS and Disco2, because i am lazy and i prefer autos for day to day driving

Manual for offroading, never tried an auto(yet)

And in A sports car its got to be manual, so you can redline it through the gears and use the engine for braking some of my Previous cars

Automatics are brilliant offroad - powertake-up is much more progessive than having to slip in a clutch.......................... but I have a manual Defender Tdi300 for offroad playing and an RRS for lighter offroading and day to day use.
I bought the Defender when I started offroading in an automatic Freelander TD4 and, while it was superb offroad, I soon started to find it's limits so bought the Defender as a Freelander sumpguard! I would not recommend anybody wanting to offroad a Freelander to do it in a manual one, it's just too easy to cook the clutch, and very expensive to replace it!
These days automatics are so good generally that I wouldn't buy another manual gearboxed car, excepting another Defender which currently cannot have an automatic gearbox, maybe the new one will get an optional autobox, heres hoping! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

We've never had an automatic so I can't really comment on that. Never had a problem with our manual Freelander when it goes off road (which is does quite often). The Freelander never sees town centres, mainly country roads. 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE

Oh dear... 16-0 to the autos

I prefer autos for day to day driving, it's much easier and you can tap your left foot to the radio without interruption But as someone else said, manual sports cars are much better for hoofing it through the lanes... or a good semi-auto.

After many vehicles (4x4.trucks,cars,etc )and nearly every imaginable road and off road condition I belonged to the no way..never brigade with regard to Automatics.
Then I was forced into one with my p38 4.6.
My problem was that I had never driven a 'good' automatic before.
To me this is now a 'no brainer' especially if you are towing or extreme off road.
Part of this is the Range Rover throttle setup which gives ultimate control when the driver gets excited !
Glad that they retained this in the RRS when in offroad modes.[/i]

I loved my Freelander with TD4 automatic. In traffic so great not having to keep de clutching. When off-roading control superb.

The only automatic Defender I've come across was an Aniversary Special Edition. A 90 V8, external roll cage, raised air intake and other juicey accesories. I believe the automatic was a standard feature rarther then a special fit, but could be wrong on that. TDV6 SE Java Black Front and Rear Headlamp guards

Nelly, re V8 Anniversary you are correct, all the V8's were automatics and came with full Lightstone grey leather interior and "Atlantis" Blue Chromaflare (and very easily scratched ) paintwork. Would love one! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
