I've recently bought a rrs , my last 2 cars were landcruisers, in the landcruiser handbook it says after a fast run or towing to leave it ticking over for 2 mins to allow the turbo to stop , i can't see anything in the rrs handbook to do the same.

The Landcruiser probably had an oil cooled turbo so you had to leave it to cool to stop the oil frying onto the bearings. It isn't necessary with RRS as IIRC it has a water cooled bearing BUT it is still good practice/ mechanical sympathy to let it have a cooling off period after a heavy engine load run. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Really? Are TDV8 turbos water cooled?

Neither the 2.7, 3.0 or 3.6 turbos are water cooled

If you have been just driving around town it's not needed

I always let it idle before switch off. A diesel engineer told me this tip back in the early 90s  Visitor from fullfatrr.com

I always make sure I cruise to a halt off boost before immediately shutting off in my turbo'd cars. Turbo failure is usually due to oil starvation due to clogged up pipes. The last thing I would do is leave an engine running whilst stationary in case it cooks the oil in the pipes and sludges them up. They definitely need a cooling off process though, this is just my way of doing it..

Ragpicker, the oil doesn't stop moving when the car stops moving! Leaving it ticking over for a bit after you've stopped will continue to circulate the oil through the turbos and hopefully prevent sludging as it will move any very hot oil back into the sump as the turbos cool

Sorry, I didn't make my point very well - I would prefer to have air flowing over the components whilst off boost and the car is moving than doing it with the car at tickover with everything becoming heat soaked. Thats all I was saying
