Flat battery after holiday away

Hi all,

Me and my partner recently returned from a 2 week trip away, and returned to the RRS (2010 TDV8) in the car park.
It unlocked fine, but when i trued to start it, the instruments were just twitching, and various warning signs were being displayed. It didn't get to the point of saying "cold start in progress" I called the AA in the end, and he started it using booster, and his fan plugged into it as well. From his checks, he said it looked a new battery, so couldn't have been that. Just wondering what the problem could be? this would have been the longest time I've left the car,

Many thanks

They don't like being left.

If you want to leave it in a car park again, get a big solar charger (ebay)

or if you leave it at home, use a CTEK charger to connect to the mains.

I concur on the CTEK chargers, i've just bought a new battery. 2 weeks later i bought the CTEK and plugged it in after not using the car for 2 days and it showed the battery was ½ full. An overnight trickle charge and it was 100% in the morning.
2 days later a run up the motorway at 110km/h for 75 minutes.
then left car for 2 days at -2 degrees C. plugged in CTEK and showed battery was again 50% charge. 2019 RRS P400e Autobiography

Ill pick up a CTEK for home, and a solar charger as well to put in the boot for when its going to be left up in a car park for a longer period.

In fairness CTEK's always find something to do! (in the need to charge the battery).

What is more of an indication is

1) The starting voltage of the battery. A CTEK indicator lead/plug will tell you that with 3 coloured LEDs

2) The time taken for the CTEK to complete to green can give you a rough guide.

You will need a decent sized solar unit.
e.g.

And a way to connect it up to the battery.

The cigar lights are disabled with the ignition off.

Many thanks Andy,

A CTEK will certainly come in useful for my other car too (TVR) which seems to drain its battery regularly too!

Thanks for the link too, the solar trickle charger looks great.

We like the CTEK 5 around here (with red button)

See here

Note this deal has an additional indicator lead (worth £5) which will be very useful if you are going to use the charger on a 2nd car.

If the OP's battery was the original fitment then it was probably ready for a change anyway. Be worth getting the alternator output checked too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The screw on indicator leads are really useful because it saves you removing the battery cover everytime you want to put the car on charge.
