Bike rack help / ideas

I'm after bike rack ideas for my rrs

Im getting a couple of bikes for me n the Mrs to take the little one on down canal etc
so don't really want to fit a tow bar + elc and a tow bar bike rack purely because it will cost nearly as much as the bikes Shocked

Will just a universal one from Halfords be ok anyone have any other recommendations?

Also not keen on the roof mounted system as an rrs sport will not be the easiest car to load bikes on the roof for a 10 min trip to nice cycle routes!

I've used one of the halfords universal ones and it was fine. The bikes did sit very high though so I git a bit of wind fart at speed- but worked a treat.

Just be wary of ones that 'hang' off the back of the boot, with the weight of the bikes, they can sometimes cause misalignment of the boot issues - I had this on a 5 series BMW.

As a comparison to Halfords, take a look at Pendle bike racks too Thumbs Up

A tow bar will always be the best solution, but I get your point on cost and I agree about popping them on the roof isn't really a feasible option.

The RRS is a fair size and I know it's a bit of hassle, but you could always pop the front wheel off and then load the bikes in the back? ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Thanks bladeboy you can't remember which one from Halfords you used by any chance ?

Beancounter good point about hanging off top off boot , just checked out the pendle one and looks good , does this not hang off the top straps ? And have you fitted to a rrs before ?
Boot not really an option with push chair , dogs etc .

Sorry for lots of questions just don't want to Censored the boot on the sport or dump the bikes on someone else car bonnet Laughing Laughing

I'm sorry no I don't. I'm working abroad at the moment so can't check. It's was a three bike one. The only snag was it put quite a bit of weight on the spoiler above the tailgate which isn't a particularly solid area.

I've not used these types of racks on RRSport as I had a tow bar mounted one. Yes, it will hang off the boot as that's where the straps attach to, usually around the top of the boot and the side of the window.

I'd seriously look at a tow bar if this is going to be a regular thing. Halfords have some very reasonable priced 2 or 3 bike racks and add c£100 for a tow bar and you will have a far better option IMO. If you don't obscure the lights and plate, then you wouldn't need to worry about the electrics, though of course, I'd consider that if you are going to travel at night with them on.

Sorry, I can't really off much more info. Embarassed ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I use a Thule 3 bike rack on the removeable towbar and it's very secure. Priced at £105 or £112 for the 974 or 972 models (most basic) Saves having to put muddy bikes in the back!!
With the light extension board it only came to a couple of hundred notes (although I've had the actually rack for some years now so can't remember exactly what it cost at the time).

If it's just a short trip most people I've seen don't bother with a trailer board (although you can pick these for £20 and could save you a hefty fine) so it's the removeable towbar and the rack... rack just pops off and goes in the back whilst you're out on the ride (or can be locked on).
