Did you use HDC at all? I've found it incredible on icy surfaces you can barely stand up on. However, winter tyres is the way to go if you're going anywhere where they have real winter rather than the ostly warm, wet, but occasionally chilly, stuff we get here. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

I took Spikes Spiders (the LR branded ones) to the Alps a couple of years ago. Only fitted them once on my driveway for practising but never needed them during the trip despite driving on ice and deep snow up and down the mountains. That's because I had proper winter tyres instead of summer or all season tyres. LR's clever electrics are great for helping you avoid getting stuck but winter tyres are really needed to help stop a heavy car on slippery surfaces. HDC is the way to go if you are really in trouble it is fantastic no doubt but the tail back it causes behind you on icy snowy roads makes you not want to do it , you feel like a prat really as you are in a great 4x4 and i mean great 4x4 but with tyres not suitable for the job. |

Yes, winter tyres are the way to go. But better feeling a prat for being slow than feeling a bigger prat for crashing... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Winters are a must for me when visiting the Alps skiing, it doesn't stop the French weapon of choice shoving you up and down the mountain though, usually a Panda 4X4 that weighs the same as a crisp packet while you are trying to wrestle 3 tonnes around the bends on snow & ice
