auto side step switch help please

My mum owns a 2015 rrs supercharged v8 Autobio addition. Ordered it from new she had the auto side steps fitted. Now here's what there's some confusion over. There's a switch inside that she's not quite sure of its purpose to do with the steps. Now she has a guy valet her car monthly and he says what should happen is you press the switch it manually deploys the side steps for access and to be able to clean then press it again for them to retract. ( with out the need for opening and keeping the doors open ). He says he has multiple range rovers that he cleans and that's what they all do. How ever when she presses this switch nothing happens at all. She took the car back to the dealers, they told her its to lock the steps in position for maintenance purposes i.e open the door to deploy the steps press the switch it looks them out, or if your inside press the switch then open the door it locks the steps underneath. She tried opening the door pressing the switch then getting out and closing but after a few seconds as normal the steps retract. So its's not doing what the guy in the dealership said..

Does anyone else have this and could they explain exactly what and how its meant to work, she thinks its faulty the dealership says its not,

And just to add a little more to this one day the stpes wouldn't deploy at all, she phoned dealers they told her to use her land rover help button in the car as they had no free time to look over it, a guy came out and after inspection found a very ill fitting live wire to the battery that was a fire risk to do with the power supply to the steps, his words were
" who ever done this wants shooting and needs some serious retraining"
so this doesn't exactly fill my mum with confidence at the minute.

It does both, but you have to push it in a set sequence ie within 5 seconds of the ignition going on, or with the ignition off. - There should be a supplement that came with the car with the full instructions on. In their it also suggests suing it for the Roof Rack loading. All of that said, there is then other behaviours which cause it to be overridden so be careful with the remote in a pocket, unless you want the valet to fall off.
