Carbon Fibre Repair?

Just a quick question, i have a CF bonnet that i want spraying fuji white. i brought the bonnet with a "chip" in the CF which has a spider like formation of lines approx 2inc in length. Can this be repaired or will it be good to paint over?

thanks

Not a common modification that - are you building a lightweight special? Rolling with laughter

I've repaired a few glassfibre boat hulls/decks where the construction is similar but using glassfibre matt and epoxy resin lay-up.

Carbon fibre (or composite) panels are made in a similar way but using carbon fibre matt and a resin lay-up or vacuum moulding.

The damage must be repaired before painting or the cracks will just re-appear.

The repair technique is to grind out the damaged section until the cracks are no longer visible and then add a layer of resin, a small piece of matt cut to the shape of the damaged part , then another layer of resin followed by a slightly larger piece of matt and so on until the ground out hollow is almost level with the surface. Then allow to cure before finishing with a gel coat filler and sanding and priming.

Unless you enjoy that sort of thing (and there aren't many that do!) - best left to an expert. Try a specialist racing yacht builder/repairer as they fabricate parts in carbon fibre all the time. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
